Just saw a blurb during the Louisville game last night that Burrow just signed a contract that makes him the highest paid NFL player ever. For a guy who's got 3 years in the league. Nuts.

It used to be that every few years you'd hear of some new contract being the richest one ever. Now it happens several times a year it seems. Burrow's record contract broke that of Justin Herbert who signed his own record-breaking contract all the way back in July...of this year.

Guys used to be content getting a contract that made him the highest paid at his position or the highest paid in the league. Now, It seems for any star player, a contract has to be considered, in some way, the richest ever. Joe Burrow is good, no doubt, but he's not "highest paid in the history of the NFL" good. At least not yet.

I heard them mention it on the radio this am. What was it - $275mill over 5yrs?!? Ludicrous!! If it was me, I'd play 5 more years and then retire and live LARGE!

Yeah, and the guarantee was something like $218 million

It's been 30+ years since they won a playoff game. And never in their history had they won a playoff game in back to back years. Hadn't been to the super bowl in 30+ years. That's not happening with a guy like Andy Dalton. The NFL is making more money than it's ever made. So it stands to reason that the to players in the league are going to make more money than they've ever made.

I'm not that surprised at the Burrows contract. If Cincy doesn't pay him, someone will. I was at the Herbert contract though.

My main point is that it's become an annual thing for guys to land the richest contract in the history of the sport, and many years it happens more than one. Herbert JUST signed the richest NFL contract in history back in July and it remained the richest for all of a couple months. This kind of thing used to sort of big sports news because it only happened every few years. Now it's commonplace.

Make of it what you will, I'm just noting the increased frequency of it.

Burrows did get the Bengals to a super bowl and is happy playing there and is really really good.

Given the career length of NFL players and when they start to decline given a guy a big deal in year 4 doesn't seem to early to me.

Five-year, $275 million contract extension with $219.01 million guaranteed, for Burrows doesn't seem to bad when you think of Kyler Murray's contract.

Kyler Murray signed a 5 year, $230,500,000 contract with the Arizona Cardinals, including a $29,035,000 signing bonus, $159,797,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $46,100,000.

Exactly. You don't pay that much money to guys that don't win for you. Burrow is a winner.

I agree. It's kind of nuts. It's what I imagine myself like if I hit the lottery every year. I can't even think about the amount of money I'd blow.

my concern is can the salary cap keep up.....seems salaries are rising at a much greater rate than the cap...imagine if Bosa played for the Bengals....thats $89 million for 2 players....still have to pay 51 others...good players will lose their job

case in point....just saw on cbssports a headline "Tee Higgins not in Bengals long term plans"....how could he be???...after paying Joe $55 per and giving Chase $35 or so in a couple of years there's not enough left for Tee

The only way to slow it down is to have the cap lag behind it. Teams will be forced to either build a good team or pay 2 players.

thats basically whats happening now IMO....the only solution I can think of is put a salary cap on each position....QBs can make no more than 40 mill....LTs 20...dline 20....and so on

Outside of Mahomes, Burrow could be the the second best QB in the NFL depending on your feelings towards Herbert or Allen and those guys signed for $200 million. He was just lucky to sign last. Mahomes at 10 years 450 million is underpaid at this point.

You can’t think of it as a dollar amount so much as the percentage of the salary cap which is going up around 10% per year and that will change during the next media negotiations which is were the real money is made not the $20 beer at the stadium. Think about it: NBC, CBS, Fox, ESPN, Amazon, Hulu, and YouTube TV. NFL is the highest rated program in 98/100 markets and they all want the bite that apple. Live sports rights is the life blood for most these media conglomerates.

I don’t know how many of y’all actually care about salary cap but the NFL owners have agreed to the least amount of the salary cap they can spend in a three year period is 90% so that money has to be spent, might as well be to the people that dynamically chance the game.

The cost of the football athlete depends on the position, not a lot of great QBs, Offensive Tackles, and pass rushers so they get top dollar vs a running back you could draft in the third round and that’s all you need. The market isn’t about what’s fair, it’s just the market.

Also, the best players in the NBA are making 50 million per year, MLB is 40 million, and Soccer is 100 million.

Lastly, I am not sure if you were making a statement “Burrow is making too much money.” If that is not the case, I sincerely apologize. But, when it comes to arguments on player salaries; I will leave you with a paraphrase quote from Zach Lowe (Basketball writer for ESPN),When I was a kid, I used to complain about the amount of my money some basketball player was making and he would say who would you rather make that money: the person on the court or the owner in the stands?
