I’m no longer much of a drinker, but I feel compelled to share recent experiences.

1. Craft breweries are everywhere. There are four within a ten minute drive for me.

2. People flock to them.

3. They make extraordinarily fine beer, consistently superb.

‘Agro-tourism’ has boomed in NoVa the past decade. Used to be mostly wineries, but now there are almost as many breweries, cideries, and distilleries. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon; outdoors, not in a bar, enjoying friends and spirits, and contributing to the local economy. Love it!

My wife and I go to the ones that are are really dog friendly. Shy Bear(Lewistown), Schaylor(Shillington), Retriever(Orefield) are very hospitable with good food and beer. Tattered Flag in Middletown, Pa is probably one the best in the state.

In some parts of the country there are too many, which is why quite a few struggle and go out of business or lose money. It is a tough business.

Always remember Elk Creek Cafe and Aleworks when you are in the State College area for a couple of days. They never brewed a bad beer. They also sell cans at the Saturday Farmers Market at Home Depot during the season.

If any of you ever drive down the I95 corridor through NC, stop at exit 41 and take a break at Dirtbag Ales. Try the blood orange kolsch (spring/summer) or cold brew mocha porter (fall/winter). Dog park, playground, live music Friday and Saturday evenings, farmers market Sunday mornings, decent short-order food and occasionally they have food trucks. Little gem right off 95. AND it’s like 4 minutes from the house so if myself, Mrs Nittanyfan333 and the little Nittany cubs are free we’ll come over and let the youngins spend some energy at the park!

Wait. Youre from Olney? Hot dam!

My favorite brewery is there. Elder Pine.
Yeah, Elder Pine had a booth at the recent Olney Days Festival, lovely pilsners.

Yeah, so many are popping up and make great beer. Still, my one BIL is a beer snob, who scoffs at anything that doesn’t come from Tree House in VT.

Tired Hands Owner is back in the game after sitting on the sidelines for a year for fostering a toxic workplace that had a lot of disturbing issues from the treatment of employees. A number of current employees are not too happy to see him back thinking that he (and his pompous attorney wife) was going to divest or at least not be involved in operational matters since the me too meltdown that took place there.

Gar, good point. A sign of good brewing is that all their styles are very drinkable.

I live right down the road from Schaylor. It looks like a used car dealer (which I think it was before) from the outside but it's a good time, especially out back in the summer.

That is a mistake because there are lots of great breweries and beers out there. Never had Treehouse beer but have had Heady Topper from Alchemist in VT plus tons of other good beers.

For years now I would say 80%+ of our dining out has been at breweries, and never ever will eat at a chain again. The food is more often than not good to very good and it is always fun trying a new IPA or two. If we are making any out of town trip, always look for new breweries along way and/or near destination. Quite often have planned a route and lodging along the way based on breweries.
My wife and I have a lot of different preferences, but this is one we share and proud to say both of my son's now that they are grown operate in the same manner!

I am 3 minutes away from Schaylor, we are neighbors!! Great place, they have lots of fun with their recipes and beer names. Couple weeks ago had a PB&J IPA, it was really solid, though the purplish color was a little different...

Tired Hands is opening a new tap room near me in Kennett Square (KSQ). Victory Brewing's KSQ location has been closed for a few years following a fire then Covid but will be reopening this fall.

In addtion to Tired Hands, the town/area has several good breweries/brew pubs within 5 miles of my home:

Kennett Brewing Company - KSQ
https://kennettbrewingcompany.com/

Braeloch Brewing
https://braelochbrewing.beer/

Victory Brewing - Kennett Square
https://taprooms.victorybeer.com/victory-brewing-company-kennett-square-ee12b29ad68f

Dew Point Brewing
https://www.dewpointbrewing.com/

The Creamery -- they don't brew their own but feature craft beers from breweries such as New Trail Brewing (Williamsport), Levante (West Chester), Stable 12 (Phoenixville), Winding Path (Dallastown), Neshaminy Creek (Croydon), and others that rotate in.

Another favorite of mine is Wilmington Brew Works in Delaware. It's just north of Wilmington near the intersection of I-95 and route 202.

One would think, but when I drive by the breweries in my area (Brookeville Beer Farm, Lone Oak Farm, Waredaca, Elder Pine), they’re packed.

Did they just open a new place off of 97 and 108?

The Brew Belly? They don’t brew their own but have a wow, excellent tap menu, exclusively local, it appears. Their Philly Cheesesteaks are highly praised by the WaPo food critic Tom Siestema. (My own assessment: they’re pretty dang good, but I’m hardly the connoisseur.)

If it’s something new you’re bringing up here (Brew Belly has been on the SE corner of 97-108 for at least three years), it’s something that’s managed to go under my radar.

I’m honestly not sure I haven’t been down there since last summer but I thought I remember hearing of a new one opening in that general area

I've got 6 breweries and 1 cidery within a 10 minute drive too, it's great. There has been a ton of growth in local breweries in the past 10-15 years. Now the market is getting saturated and some of those that didn't make great beer are shutting down which I guess was inevitable. Most have semi-permanent food trucks on site too. This has almost completely replaced bars for me and I spend more time at the breweries instead. It sure is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon.

I believe you have the key phrase there, “replaced bars”. These breweries have a better atmosphere and most times have good food as well as local music.

There is also the new cider place on 108 near 94. Not sure if that’s what you might be thinking of.

Also really great place to take small kids as well. They often have games for the kids or open spaces where they can play and not ruin the atmosphere.

Yes, there seems to be a definite plan to be kid-friendly.
