OT - Nov28 - Happy Birthday Claude Levi-Strauss

November 28, 1908:
Birthday of Claude Lévi-Strauss, French anthropologist who has been called the "father of modern anthropology" primarily for his development of the theory of structuralism--"the search for the underlying patterns of thought in all forms of human activity." Lévi-Strauss argued that the "savage" mind had the same structures as the "civilized" mind and that human characteristics are the same everywhere.

And my father, would have been 96 today. There was a point in my time as a grad student at Maryland that I had one last qualifying exam to pass; it was either pass or else get kicked out of the program. (Maryland had a fifty-percent washout rate, I’d say.) The exam was in complex analysis, my worst subject, the standard six problems in four hours. I’m the last student there, something like ten minutes remaining, and I’m stuck on the last problem, and I tell myself “You’ve got to do it for your father.” Then, almost miraculously, I found a pretty proof that saved my ***. He never let me quit, may God rest his soul.

Edit: My mom died when I was ten, when he was 39, left him with five kids 12 and under. He went through hell.
