In Mississippi, that’s merely possibly believably shady. **

And we just thought that ‘Nasty Bunch’ was only a signature cheer. **

Surprised it took this long to break. For the past couple of years I've hearing rumors that state power brokers where very concerned and "circling the wagons" to protect ole Fill.

And here is example 3,592,402 of why we need local journalism. The national talking heads that misrepresent and create division while commenting on already known issues is not helpful to improving our country. Local journalism is helpful.

I'd be surprised if any serious state charges against Fill materialize. It will probably all come down to how interested the US Attorney is.

Phil is a Haley Barbour underling. So is Lynn Fitch. So is Shad White. So is Tate Reeves, for that matter. Nothing will happen to Phil on the state level, and Haley wields enough power on the federal level that nothing will happen to him from the US Attorney's office.

Local journalism is helpful, but who is going to pay for it? Need local businesses to fund real reporting, but the problem is a lot of the local businesses benefit from the corruption.

Wow. You outdid yourself with that one. Guy has saved the state untold millions of dollars (of actual misused dollars, so there's no excuse) and you hate him because he's conservative.

Not only that, you use a term that's been almost solely used from liberal socialistic groups all throughout time.

Only a truly warped brain can conjure up the things you do. It's probably more simple, just angry 'I know you are but what am I' type nonsense.

We have so many people in this state that live in conditions most of us cannot imagine. Their homes aren't safe, they don't have reliable transportation, jobs close to home are scarce, and a lot of these small towns are 20 minutes to even a grocery store.

These are the people that our government officials steal from. Like this guy in Tunica County.

And White probably shouldn’t misrepresent that for his own sake, given their history

I'm conservative to the core, and dorndog is right. Shad is a useful idiot. I know a lot of the inner workings of how he was placed in that position. Stacy Pickering started asking some uncomfortable questions of some people, and the power brokers moved him out of there and placed a safe pawn in that office. Shad isn't a dummy, though. He knows he's got to appear to be "for the people", so he goes after quantity, instead of quality. He will only go after low hanging fruit. And that's the way his masters want it.

There needs to be a mass evacuation of the Delta. There are very few decent jobs and there will likely never be any decent jobs there. Up through the early 90s, there were small factories scattered around, (taking advantage of cheap labor, low taxes and little regulation), but NAFTA and favorable trade deals with the Chicoms killed most of that.

There already has been, for the most part. Only people left are the rich folks and the poor folks.

Are there many hunting lodges out there? I think eventually that could be a big money-maker for the area. I'm talking the nice ones that bring people in from out of state, not the shacks and RV parks where Danny Joe from Clinton pays $1,000/year to hunt. Outside of the public land, not sure how much of the private owned land is consolidated enough to do something like that.

Advertising and subscriptions?

If people stopped watching Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, and Rachel Maddow then perhaps some advertising dollars would go from those shows to local journalism sites. I doubt that would cover all costs. Users subscribing could also help. Again, I doubt that too would cover all costs.

Here is what I know-
- The death of local journalism allows towns and states to go more unchecked than they already are. That never leads to less corruption.
- The national opinion shows manipulate and misrepresent reality in order to create outrage and viewership. That never leads to improved relations.

Shad has gone after some small level corruption. He's ignored larger level corruption. And he's irresponsibly slandered some people which if he didn't have immunity for he'd get hammered. Shad leaves Hinds county corruption alone. He leaves a lot of corruption at BOS level and larger cities (whose politicians actually have some influence) alone.

I could cut him some slack for operating within the constraints of reality. I'm not sure he could take on some of the more significant issues without losing all power to do anything. But there's no excuse for be abusive with your office's power. Never need to let him near any other office. I hope he runs for another office and loses sooner rather than later.

Can someone explain how $5 mill to USM for a volleyball facility (under the guise of a completely bogus lease) didn’t result in any charges?

Look, politics are like wrasslin'. It's all about the appearance. The government is greed driven and takes our money for their own. They just use the press to give the appearance of do-goodery.
There's always something to distract and get attention. In the end, they're taking our money and working with the other established governments to keep it all rolling. That's why we're in debt up to our eyeballs.
We all know Phil won't take one bit of bad press for this really. Favre has taken his. Of course, Favre is a repeat offender of scrumbaggery. So it's ok.

This really is end times. I've agreed with glfr and dorn in a week's span of time

Punishing bad gov't/corruption should absolutely be common ground for folks of all political backgrounds. Anytime there's a case of clear-cut bad acting or illegalities and the first thing a person says is "Well whut about _____ (something done by someone in other party)?" - they're telling on themselves: they look at it like a sports rivalry & don't care about it when "their" team does it.

This is mild stuff. Mississippi is as, if not more so, corrupt than Louisiana. From the top to the bottom. I've seen it first hand. Representatives don't go to Jackson for their $22 K a year salary. It goes all the way down to county elected officials, too, though. Haley B was/is a scourge on this state

Phil is a Haley Barbour underling. So is Lynn Fitch. So is Shad White. So is Tate Reeves, for that matter. Nothing will happen to Phil on the state level, and Haley wields enough power on the federal level that nothing will happen to him from the US Attorney's office.

With this much known corruption and so many corrupt people, I dont understand why they are supported in elections. Is it really a matter of them being the lesser of two ****** options?
This isnt some 'gotcha' post. Your comments just stood out and I dont know what the specific alternative would be.

When you say "government", who do you mean? People love to throw that catch all out there, but people come and go in the government all the time. Do you mean elected officials? Local, state or federal? Government workers?

Be specific.

Watch this movie if yoi haven't already. It a comedy but it nails how people get in office and the corruption once they get there.

Nobody's going to leave as long as they continue to build subsidized housing there. I have asked "legislators" for years in person and via email ... WHY DO WE CONTINUE TO HOUSE PEOPLE WHERE THERE ARE NO JOBS ??? Build the housing in areas of possible employment even if it's in another state !!!!! Thanks for nothing Bennie .

It would be better if it did work that way, but unfortunately advertising and subscriptions don't generally get you journalism. Even when people paid for local newspapers, you often got pretty ****** journalism (e.g., Clarion Ledger). You'd occasionally get a journalist that actually understood the value of even handed reporting in a democracy/republic, but that was unfortunately the exception and not the rule.

Hell, if advertising and subscriptions got you journalism, we'd at least have good journalism for national issues, but instead we have "journalists" that do things like actively participate in suppressing news when it hurts their preferred candidate.

Haley Barbour still has a ton of political power in Mississippi. The Republican candidate that he wants in office generally gets in office. He makes sure the dollars and influence go to the "right" candidate that best suits his agenda. Stacy Pickering slipped through the cracks, and we see what happened there. The sooner Haley Barbour isn't involved in Mississippi politics, the better. Of course, there'll just be someone else to fill that vacuum when he's gone. Like I said in another post, Mississippi politics is as, if not more so, corrupt than Louisiana politics. Mississippi politicians just smile at you more

Difference between politicians in Louisiana and Mississippi: In Mississippi they don't admit they're crooked. In Louisiana they admit they're crooked and are forgiven for being honest about being crooked.

Haley Barbour and all his foot soldiers have an incredible grip on state elections. Just absolutely crushing to the point that it’s not a fair fight. There are better options out there but they’ll never see the light of day because of Barbours political machine.
