PSU is proud to announce that Tonya Peeples has been named the permanent Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering, effective Jan. 1, 2024! She has served in an interim capacity since July, previously serving as senior associate dean. https://bit.ly/49ZQTHP

I guessed this before I read the article. This is soooo PSU:

”Peeples has held the role in an interim capacity since July…Peeples was selected following a national search led by an 18-member committee and chaired by Tracy Langkilde, the Verne M. Willaman Dean of the Penn State Eberly College of Science.”

NATIONAL. SEARCH. o_O , yet promote from within. How much did the NATIONAL. SEARCH. o_O cost?

She has an impressive background….in Education.

It amazes me that these Professors rarely have real world experience…no job with DuPont, 3M, Thermo Fisher, Dow Chemical?

Seems like you either do industry or academia tract . Collaborations and networking with industry to be able to obtain grant money is key though .

I would love to know how the NATIONAL. SEARCH. o_O was conducted. How many external candidates did PSU interview? Were there second or third interviews with any external candidates? Was anyone else considered seriously?

I get it, it’s a choice between the two and industry Pays more….but you would think their would be some prereqs for professors.

I mean History, English, doesn’t require industry experience as you can’t really get experience for those subjects.

Education Is a safe space place…I think there are people who just want to teach, but I also feel it’s to avoid the perception of working in the big bad commercial sector.

My good friends daughter is both a math and engineering student finished up Masters in both btw, very smart…asked about working for a few years before she wants to teach at the university and shook her head adamantly no way…I said wouldn’t you want a few years experience to bring to the classroom, said no you don’t need industry experience…unreal…

Nope….much like those fireman jobs they have to post and no one gets the job, as they already know who they are going to hire…what’s funny is they are Hippocrates…complain about the big bad business world and the swim with sharks environment yet they kind of do same thing…SMH

My daughter is interviewing for tenure tract positions in engineering, and from what I gather you’re spot on .

I considered that they knew who they were going to hire. It happens all the time, in industry too.

A very robust and broad record of Equity leadership though.

Clark Scholars Program:
Clark Scholars Program | Leadership Team | Penn State Engineering (psu.edu)

Credited with writing the College's Equity Plan (though I don't believe I have ever seen her name on it)
Equity-Action-Plan1.pdf (psu.edu)

Former Associate Dean of DEI

Came to PSU (hired by Justin Schwartz, now the PSU Provost) to set up the DEI bit in the College of Engineering:
Working together to achieve equity and inclusion | Penn State Engineering (psu.edu)

I don't know when she last actually "taught". Probably back in her early (pre-PSU) days at ISU.
I do not believe she ever had any published research since coming to PSU - so it would be difficult to decipher any "special area of interest".
The listed Honors and Awards over the last 10 years are:
  • Bronze Awardee in the ASEE Deans’ Diversity Recognition Program, ASEE Diversity Recognition Program (ADRP), January 2021
  • STEM Trailblazer 2020, STEMconnector, 2020
  • Diversity Champion, Finalist, Iowa Women of Innovation, Iowa Technology Association, 2016
  • Diversity Champion, Finalist, Iowa Women of Innovation, Iowa Technology Association, 2016
  • Diversity Pioneer, American Institute of Chemical Engineers Minority Affairs Committee, 2015
  • Diversity Champion, Finalist, Iowa Women of Innovation, Iowa Technology Association, 2015
  • Fellow: Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering Program, 2015
  • Diversity Catalyst Award, University of Iowa, 2013
  • Invitee: “Identifying and Surmounting Impediments to Implementing Diversification Efforts in Engineering Education”, American Society of Engineering Education and National Academy of Engineering Workshop, 2013

How does any of that qualify her to be the Dean of Engineering? PSU’s suckery aside, this is a very significant position at this university.

I’m just guessing here but it’s probably fairly difficult to find a black female PhD from Johns Hopkins in Chemical Engineering with the kind of experience that Dr Peoples has to lead a big engineering department such as the one at PSU, and since she’s already been there for several years they knew what they were getting. Moreover this appointment puts another minority into a non traditional role whereby it might change the perception about the possibility of attracting black students into the engineering program, especially black females.

Regrettably, the most qualified candidate turned them down. It wasn't about the money. He said Faber was "just to good a place to leave."

Then PSU should have saved itself the time and expense of going though a "national search."

I just read your updated post. PSU’s priority for its largest research unit was DEIB. o_O , for which they got someone from iowa, not exactly very well known in engineering. For f*ck’s sake.

They actually got her from Penn State. She’s been there since 2018. Iowa was before that. This was an internal hire.

Before I even clicked the link I knew a black female would be selected. PSU is just like our national politicians. Virtue signalling controls all personnel decisions.

Word on the street is that Iowa professors are like their football team, no offense. Great hires for your DEI initiatives.

After an exhaustive, worldwide search, we discovered that the absolute best candidate was here all along.

You guys are so predictable….
You don’t like the hire because she’s
…. A woman
….. A black
….. A result of a national search
……Makes more money than you
…… From Iowa
….. Smarter than you
…..A DEI spokesperson
All of the above

How many of you brain surgeons have PhDs from Hopkins?

You can’t teach at the university level without advanced degrees. Practical experience means nothing. It’s all about degrees, DEI, and stats. That’s today’s advanced education and why it’s broken.

One of the best professors I had in grad school was a corporate attorney for DuPont. He taught a business law course and brought a lot of real cases into his instruction as case studies for us. He was great. I know that was the exception rather than the norm.

Thanks, I understand that. I have a brother in law who is a research professor in science at Clemson e.g UPenn, U Chicago, and Oxford. Having the right degrees I get it, it baffles me is all on both sides, the school and the educator without real world experience. Especially, in subject areas where students will enter the commercial sector.
