OT: R&R HOF Nominees

She is not remotely rock, but I think Mariah Carey gets in. Critics have always loved Outkast, so they will also probably get in.

I can't understand how Coldplay is eligible but does not even get nominated.

I think OutKast gets in also. One of the few rap artists I like even have their Speakerbox CD

The R&R HOF is more like the R&R Hall of Everyone Gets a Medal. I visited it once in 2004 and was bored.

“These remarkable Nominees have each created their own musical style and attitude, impacting generations of music lovers and contributing to the ever-evolving sounds and continued growth of rock & roll”, said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

I mean yeah these nominees had some great songs but what did they really do for music. Do they do anything new? Anything innovative? Just seems like they made some popular songs. The only one on the list that may have done something at their time is Cyndi Lauper? Not filling arenas like Madonna or Swift but I think she broke down some barriers in a make dominated industry at the time? Maybe not? I don't know. I find the R&R HOF irrelevant. Maybe important to those in the industry but meh.....

The Smiths and Joy Division were pretty influential, even though Joy Divison only had 2 albums but then they turned into New Order after Ian Cutis killed himself.

Agreed - nearly ever band post The Smiths/Joy Division credit them as an influence (U2, NIN, Radiohead, Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Belle & Sebastian, etc.). At one point The Smiths were the biggest/most important band in England; that's saying something. Of the list, my top five would be:

- Joy Division/New Order
- Oasis
- Outkast
- The White Stripes
- Cindi Lauper

First out would be Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, and Mariah Carey. That said, Carey will almost certainly get in. Random other thoughts - Soundgarden was less than the sum of it's parts; they have maybe two 'great' songs. Phish is too niche IMO - can't ever remember hearing a Phish song on the radio (but they're touring monsters).

That list would match mine and yea those would be my first 3 out as well.
My only caveat would be if we are giving Joy Division credit for being influential then we probably have to do that with Checker as well just for dancing. 🤷‍♂️
Agree about Soundgarden and Phish is just laughable if you add them you might as well add a Dead band.

I don't care for Morrisey's vocal style, so I was never a Smith's fan, but they absolutely should be in. I would love to see Zevon, but I would be surprised if it happened. I would like to see Joy Division get in. There's a lot of names on the lists of artists that I liked to some degree, but I don't see a lot of performers that I would call great or particularly influential.

They were my first concert, with, get this, opener Billy Crystal at the Scranton Masonic Temple.


Take the one about his big break opening for the rock group Blood, Sweat and Tears in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Originally set to do 20 minutes, he had to keep returning to the stage when the band’s temperamental lead singer would launch into the hit “Spinning Wheel” and then find a reason to swear and thrown down his mic. Somehow, Crystal desperately kept mining his brain for more ways to keep the crowd laughing instead of shouting, until they eventually wanted more of him instead of the band.

Oh the whole thing is a total pile of crap and it's in cleveland. Hot trash in the city.

But the 3 bands I mentioned are all actually awesome bands (IMO). More music I like than a typical year for these elitist clowns.

Steaming piles of crap. Yeah, the stadium has been called 'The Mistake by the Lake', it should be that 'HOF'.

No justice until Tommy James and the Shondells are in!
