You'll never find your goal on a sandy beach... You'll never drill for oil on a city street... I know you're lookin' for your ruby in a mountain of rocks... But there ain't no Coup de Ville hidin' at the bottom of a Cracker Jack Box!

Just read an article yesterday about all the recent rock artists that passed away recently. Now have to add Meatloaf to guys like Charlie Watts, Moody Blues drummer Graeme Edge, Uriah Heep and Lucifer’s Friend singer John Lawton, Budgie lead singer and bass player Burke Shelley, ZZ Top bass player Dusty Hill, Robby Steinhardt the Kansas fiddle player, Jim Steinman (Meatloaf’s collaborator), John Hinch original Judas Priest drummer, Return To Forever keyboardist Chick Corea (okay he’s jazz fusion), Syl Sylvain the New York Dolls guitarist, Mike Nesmith of the Monkees, Alexi Laiho guitarist for Children of Bodom, Animals guitar player Hilton Valentine and several others.

Meatloaf famously sang that he’d “do anything for love,” but he wouldn’t “do that.” What was the “that?”

BTW, I just read that he had a 3 1/2 octave vocal register (I.e., vocal range). That is frickin’ crazy.

On full display here (this video is tremendous for many reasons but the audio is a bit delayed…):

So what is "that"? "It's the line before every chorus," explained Loaf. "There's nine of them, I think. The problem lies because Jimmy likes to write, so you forget what the line was before you get to 'I won't do that.'" (Some of the things the song says he won't do: forget the way you feel right now; forgive himself if you don't go all the way tonight; do it better than he does it with you, so long; and stop dreaming of you every night of his life.)

I cannot tell you how many times I listened to Bat Out of Hell beginning to end (vinyl of course - meaning you had to physically do something to listen to both sides). If you have never listened to it, please do.

They are saying he got the name "Meatloaf" from his school football coach.
Heard an interview with him this AM....said he got it when he was 8 years old. The guy was awesome. Saw him at F&M in Lancaster in 79 or 80. I can remember the sweat coming off of his hair and hitting us in the face, we were right in front of the stage. Guy played for 2.5 hours...no warmup band.

What a shame. Several celebrities who spent time with him said you couldn’t find a kinder human being. May he RIP!
