Who would be considered the greatest movie music composer when compared side by side? Henry Mancini or John Williams? Both are giants with blockbuster movies and memorable songs to their credits between the two of them.

In "The New Biographical Dictionary of Film," David Thomson included one solitary composer, Bernard Hermann.

I forgot: One regular poster on the old board was Hermann's grandson.

Anything that Thomas Newnan does. He has the distinction of having the most Oscar nominations of any composer without an Oscar.

Movie released in 1985 - would be kinda nice to see a sequel 40 years later on the kids as they enter into their 60's and see if they ever kept in touch. Maybe they could call it the "Blue Plate Special Club".

Having a melancholy, gloomy state of mind kind of day as I kick off my weekend, remembering my early days of the 60's.

A few comments from the guys & gals worth reading:

"My Marine husband was killed in Vietnam in August 1967. This song came on the radio while I was driving home from the funeral home the night of his visitation. It brought me to tears then and still does every time I hear it. Beautiful and meaningful song. Love it and all the memories it brings back to me. Thank you."

"Danced with my high school sweetheart to this song in 1962 and at our wedding in 1964 and played it at his funeral 32 years later. He was in the Air Force and in my heart is will always be my soldier boy."

"One of my mother's favorites for my father. He was in the army and she used to play this all the time. They're reunited in heaven."

"This was my song for my boyfriend/fiance during the Vietnam war. Every time I hear it I still think of him Unfortunately he didn't come home. I'll never forget him & have never gotten over the loss of him."

"In my college fraternity it was a tradition to play this song at the last record hop. All the graduating seniors who were in ROTC would be dancing with their sweethearts, and you could hear the girls softly singing it to their solider boys. It was a different time then, a better time."

Danny was part of our close group of about 11 students at PSU; in 69' Dan decided to leave PSU and join the military and became a Field/combat medic. Whenever I'm at the Court house in Wilkes-Barre, I stop by the Veteran Memorial honoring the Fallen Veterans to say a few words and a prayer to Danny.
Oh, so long ago..........

Curious as to what your favorites are. My father loved the score of “The Third Man.”

My motivation: TCM is doing their 31 Days of Oscar and today is best song. “The Sandpiper” just now came on. 21% Tomatometer but it has “The Shadow Of Your Smile.”

I'll nominate a few:

Can't believe no one has mentioned Patton yet.
Forrest Gump
the 1998 version of The Thomas Crown Affair with its jazz heavy track. Bonus points with a rockin' Rene Russo.
