National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day - January 14, 2024

Hot pastrami sandwiches are some of the most popular sandwiches served in the U.S. Every day, a multitude of different people enjoy these sandwiches, which shouldn’t be surprising considering just how good they are. Pastrami is a cured and smoked deli meat that’s made from beef naval plate and seasoned with black pepper, paprika, garlic, and a number of other seasonings.

It was first served in New York City in the late 19th century and has been a culinary sensation ever since. That’s why it’s celebrated with its own holiday known as National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day. This holiday is observed on January 14th and encourages all of us to grab a hot pastrami sandwich.
Although American pastrami was invented during the late 19th century, its origins actually go back much further than that. The name pastrami comes from the Romanian word “Pastrama,” a conjugation of the Turkish word “Pastirma,” which means pressed meat, and the Romanian word “Pastra,” which means to conserve food.

Although various meats were wind-dried all over Asia and Europe for over a thousand years, it wasn’t until Jewish immigrants from Romania and Bessarabia introduced their version of pastrami to the United States. These immigrants would turn goose breast into pastrami, but in the U.S., beef naval was cheaper and more readily available, so that’s what they used. This is how beef pastrami was born. So enjoy your hot pastrami sandwich everyone. I’ll have mine the traditional way - on rye bread with spicy brown mustard, and a half dill pickle on the side, with a seltzer with a slice of lemon to wash it down.

Joey Chestnut, competitive eater, once ate 25 pastrami sandwiches in 10 minutes.

Years ago in the early 90's I worked on Liberty Ave, Queens NY. The street was under an elevated train line. Less than a block away was a sandwich shop that made an unbelievable pastrami hero. I left NY/ LI in 1996 and will always miss all the great food - especially pizza.

I used to be a solicitor for a large sportsman club in Western PA and a fella used to make the most amazing deer pastrami. Thanks for the post reminded me how delicious that was.

Cleveland westsiders @Obliviax and others. Joe’s Deli!
I once asked them how much meat per sandwich and was told around 2/3 pound. Too far to drive (and didn’t use to be open on Sunday) but sure sounds good!

Joe's is the best! Their Motzo Soup is great in the winter. And their prime rib is awesome on Friday nights.
