The smart phone is the bane of civilization.

Anyone under the age of 30 will never know what it's like to have to wait to act on your impulses. Any thought or idea is instantly blasted onto Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok or any number of other social media outlets.

Our daughter avoids social media because she wants to have a career as a writer and doesn't want to be canceled over some small microagression or whatever it's called now. We also drilled into her that colleges have denied admission for some pretty small transgressions.

As posted several times before, I'm so glad there were no phone cameras and social media around when I was in college so that none of the things we did are living on the internet (only memories of the dumb things we did). Today's kids have it rough and you think they would be more aware!

Yep, it's crazy. Good on you guys for teaching her well. My wife is a pediatrician and so many parents just let their kids have unfettered access to social media and don't monitor what they're up to at all.

The sad thing is that folks won't differentiate between something said as a young or mid teenager and something said as a mature adult.

I can't recall the story now, but there was a person just destroyed for something they had posted on social media a decade ago when they were about 16. Now in their mid-20s, they were utterly destroyed. Like you said, I"m just glad my thoughts and feelings as a 16 year old aren't immortalized anywhere.

You're right, it happens all the time. Kids today do not realize what a simple internet search can do to destroy their lives - have to be aware that anything you do may be recorded in some form these days and live in perpetuity.

We would pretty much all be up a creek without a paddle if posts that may have been widely acceptable in the past are judged by today's standards. Probably a good thing for all of us there was no social media.
