CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Charleston Police are releasing new details on a Wednesday night shooting investigation.

According to CPD around 10:45 on Wednesday night officers arrived outside of 1300 Renaissance Circle apartment complex for a report of a shooting. When police got there, they found the victim, 37 year-old Dennis Butler of Charleston, with multiple gunshot wounds. Butler later died.

Police say they discovered that earlier in that night Butler was approached about speeding in the apartment complex while children were playing. Police say Butler then left the complex and returned a short time later when he parked his vehicle in front of the apartment, pulled out a AR15 style rifle and started firing at people attending a party. Police say a bystander attending the party quickly pulled out their pistol and fired at Butler, fatally injuring him.

Charleston police say several witnesses and the person who fired the gun waited on police to get there and fully cooperated with the investigation. At this time no one has been charged in the shooting. The investigation now goes to the Kanawha County Prosecutors office for review.

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
It is always interesting to hear a German Oompah band play that at Oktoberfest in Munchen. The drunk Australians (as if there are any other kind) love that song.

Hmm, maybe the best answer to lethal violence is gun defense.
So, an eye for an eye....

Then...perhaps someone can shoot the second person in their own self defense? They could use the "stand your ground" defense.

I like it.

Let's try your concept in a few different environments...

The best answer to drunk driving is drunk driving.

The best answer to homelessness is homelessnes.

The best answer to rape is rape.

You know - it's all very plausib.e

Like in Chicago, right?

If you let criminals run rampant, you will get violence. Apparently it's a difficult concept for some. Look at this thread - legitimate self defense takes place and people are mourning the death of the assailant. You guys are sick. No wonder violence in places like Chicago is allowed to destroy, often minority, communities.

What are your thoughts on arming pets? Think of all the dog on dog violence that could be prevented at the park. Keep an open mind.

That wasn't my concept, that was yours. You said gun for gun, I said lethal violence with proper gun defense. I don't care if it's a gun, a knife, a car, etc put the ****** down. For those unfamiliar with a dictionary, defense is not revenge.

But when does it stop? What if this woman had hit a kid at the party? She got lucky she only hit him.

If you can't be rational, don't enter the conversation. No one is "mourning the death of the assailant." This is why no one takes gun nuts seriously. The NRA has brainwashed you guys into supporting their terrorism.

I am confused here, so you wanted another, though smaller, Las Vegas? Gunman opens fire and kills many people?

This isnt like Chicago, the person who fired waited for the police and gave a statement.

Maybe we need to be like Denmark and take away all the guns....but then people will just use bows and arrows.....

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- A man armed with a bow fired arrows at shoppers in a small Norwegian town Wednesday, killing five people before he was arrested, authorities said.

IDK the answer, it appears in Charleston, the women may have saved many lives.

Lol, I don't even own a gun, nor do I want to. That said, I'm perfectly fine with law-abiding citizens having them for much needed defense.

Now you are irrational by your "supporting their terrorism" statement.

I’m asking honestly. Wisecracks and saying other answers are wrong is easy. What is the answer?
Hate to speak for Ro, but my guess is that he is looking bigger picture. Perhaps this one instance, the "good guy with a gun" worked, but it seems to be the exception more than the rule. In the long run, adding more guns to society seems more likely to lead to more violence and not less.

Apparently you don't understand what the word rational means.
I don’t even understand how a situation like this is a rational vs. irrational issue. Like you, I don’t own a gun. I’ve never held a gun in my life. Absolutely no desire to. But I’m glad that in this situation where some nutjob decided to start s shooting up a party somebody else did have a gun to put him down.
Maybe I’m missing something here.

OK, but this topic was about a very specific situation. Want to get rid of all guns? OK, it won’t affect my life. But were not getting rid of all guns at this point and if people are shooting up innocent people I’m OK with another person shooting the guilty person who is shooting the innocent people.

I think if 'ro had taken the stance how did the assailant get a gun, his argument gets traction, at least it does with me. What he asked and proffered was completely different though.

The only reason Chicago's strict gun laws don't work is that they only enforce them against law abiding citizens.

Which is why I asked the question. I work in an elementary school and was dealing with a pretty delicate situation almost simultaneously as the Texas situation was unfolding. Everybody has criticisms and wisecracks. I’m just looking for solutions. I heard (almost instantly) politicians talking about tougher gun laws which, again, has no direct bearing on me. Tougher gun laws? Great, I’m all for it. But that does nothing to account for all the guns out there. More mental health services? Great, I’m all for that as well. But when a nut job with a rifle busts into an elementary school and starts picking people off, gun control and counseling have no effect.

An additional common refrain after a mass shooting, he says, is a call for policies that make it easier for people to carry guns so they can defend themselves. "Well, guess what, the data do not bear that out at all," says Webster. "If anything, it shows higher rates of fatal mass shootings in response to weaker regulations for concealed carry by civilians."

More guns definitely not the answer. The US is the only country that has more estimated guns than people. Twice as many per capita than the runner-up. Yet we are 10th in gun homicides per capita - only a few Latin American countries, where gang violence is rampant, have more per capita. Used to be automobiles were the leading cause of deaths of children, now it’s guns.

OK, I’m good with your “not the answer”. But what is the answer? Or better yet, is there an answer or is this just something we’re going to have to deal with?

IMO, given the politics of it combined with our culture, we are just going to have to live with it, unfortunately. We are not a civilized country.
