Ok - for those who do the cooking, what appetizers do you serve before your thanksgiving meal? I’m looking for some new ideas. Thinking of trying some fig and blue cheese bruschetta, and some bacon wrapped goat cheese filled dates. Any suggestions? Also, what wine do you serve with the turkey? Thanks

Dry reisling or gewurtztraminer for wines. Both those appetizers sound great. What time is dinner? 😏

I'm going to Phoenix; I'm eating Mexican food all week every meal. I'll make an exception on Thursday but I'll still probably Ubereats some Del Taco late night.

My advice is to make the apps really small so that guests don’t fill up pre-dinner. Small date apps would seem difficult even with toothpicks.

Are you serving a traditional TDay menu or something more exotic or regional/ethnic. ?

Dinner is very traditional. It’s boring. My wife never changes a dish so I like to get inventive with the apps. Guests 10 total arrive at 3 pm for drinks, and turkey is served at 5 pm. Pumpkin and apple pies and coffees after. Yawn…..

Very simple here, Assorted wine, Usinger’s summer sausage, Tilamook cheese(s) and a nice cracker…

Thanksgiving to supposed to be traditional and you should expect some yawning after the meal. Appetizers aren't really a requirement and if presented should be very light, perhaps some chilled nuts and light cheese with small crackers.

BTW, goat cheese sucks. There's a reason it's rarely served and never requested. EDIT: Now that I think of it goat cheese is perfect as a Thanksgiving app since now one will take a second bite so they'll still have their appetite for dinner. ;)

As for wine, you should have a variety of whites. An Oregon Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, a Chardonnay from Napa, and a Riesling from the Finger Lakes. Choose a semi-sweet Riesling. My wife loves a good French Vouvray (Chenin Blanc). Oh, and always have at least one red option. I'd pick a Shiraz or a Cab from the Adelaide Plains Region in South Australia (Chapel Hill if you can find it but the reds from this region are outstanding). My wife loves a good French Vouvray (Chenin Blanc).

IMHO goat cheese makes everything taste better. And since there are only 10 of us I’m not going to open 4 different varieties of wines. Only 7 of us will be drinking wine. There is a school of thought that the wine should be chosen to pair with the side dishes rather than the turkey, and since the rich sides are really the major part of the meal, to choose a Pinot Noir rather than a white varietal. That seems like good logic to me. I have a few 2019 Sanford Pinot Noirs (watch the film Sideways) in my wine fridge as we speak which would suffice. And I might open some champagne with whatever Apps we come up with. Anyone have a good caviar idea? Shrimp mousse? Crab stuffed mushroom caps? Smoked oysters? I’d like something classy but not too difficult to prepare.

Of course goat cheese makes everything taste better. It would make dog crap taste better as nothing tastes worse than goat cheese.

As for the wine, 10 or 12, at 2 glasses per person equals at least 3 bottles. May as well expect a few to drink 3 glasses.

You can do traditional Gourmet.
Agree Apps go light…

Perhaps asparagus wrapped in prosciutto
Maybe a little cheese…no crackers If Good Cheese!

Wines I would go Sauvignon blanc and as mentioned an Oregon Pinot noir.

My thanksgiving menu so far;

Spatchcocking a brined turkey on grill
Cognac Turkey gravy (not from the drippings;)
Cornbread stuffing (chestnuts, celery, rum raisin, carrots, peaches, onions, sage, rosemary, thyme, apples with buttermilk) Amazingly crusty yet moist.
Sweet potatoes orange citrus glaze casserole (Parmesan and rum raisin garnish)
Green Beans and Pecans with Lemon zest
Pearl onions and smoked ham (everyone loves it)
Mashed potatoes (PA wife needs them)

not sure on dessert yet

Oh my, your pearl onion recipe is really good. I'll be doing that one again this year. Thanks again!

That all sounds great. Wife doesn’t let me monkey with her traditional mains. I only get to do the appetizers and drinks. It’s our compromise and we’re married 42 years! Save me some leftovers.

After many years of preparing, cooking, and cleaning up over a two to three day period for a one hour long meal, we are worn out and have invited whoever wants to go from our gang to a restaurant. For those that still long for the home cooked meal, cook your own darn turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving- I’m sure you’re doing this for a very good reason.
Yea we do turkey all year long at the restaurant so thanksgiving day we go full Monty and are open for dinners 11-6 reservation only. We also do cold reheat pickups Wednesday. So I’m having the “turkey dreams” and singing turkey song by Adam Sandler. 🤣

Ham from the penn state meat market, my son is picking it up today. Roasted sweet potatoes or au gratin potatoes, sous vide carrots, Brussel sprouts, cream of crab soup, pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll, apple pie.

I like rumaki (bacon wrapped water chestnuts) and a vegetable tray with smoked gouda. Can't do too much.

Wines:

Riesling with apps or a glass of Prosecco to give thanks.

Zinfandel with meal. Pedroncelli is a good choice.
