Side note, while stunning, Neuschwanstein is pretty small. My wife and I made the hike up about 10 years ago when in Bavaria. You can’t beat the views, but I expected a bigger castle based on all of the pictures.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d live there if someone gave me the keys. I’d just need to sell a few things.
Neuschwanstein is picturesque and worth visiting but for grandeur, opulence and historical significance Versailles blows it away. Out of curiosity I looked it up. Neuschwanstein gets 1.5 million visitors a year. Versailles gets 15 million.

Great use of data.

And it's only about half finished anyway....

Agreed. I liked some of the other castles in the area better as well.

If I recall correctly, it was unfinished at the time of King Ludwig's tragic and mysterious "accidental drowning," and the newly formed German state, which wasted no time in claiming the castle, chose not to complete it.

My recollection from my tour there is that the partial construction was limited to the interior of the castle. Only 4-5 rooms were finished and lavishly furnished. The castle exterior and building structure are as originally planned, I think(?).

Iconic to me means an extremely unique building which a vast majority of people can see a picture of and immediately associate it with a city and/or country. Disregarding current events, my pick is this masterpiece......

I realize that this is a highly subjective thread and I do not wish to take away from the Cinderella vs. Neuschwanstein debate raging here but for my $ this is the winner - La Sagrada Familia

Too niche and unknown for most - important, but not iconic. Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, and The Dom are iconic IMO (obviously subjective).

No--there was to be more. Buildings in the open area between the gate and the current main building including a chapel (yellow part) as part of a keep were never built (some foundations were).
