Yes, that is a Gearing class destroyer. They were in service from late in WW2 until the late 1970s or early 1980s, with several updates and modifications over the years. They were fine ships.

if you are ever in Fall River MA, there is one there (DD850) you can tour. I visited a few years back, and crazy as this will sound, it actually smelled like home.
