As a rule; the bigger the tires and the more jacked up a truck is, the smaller the guy driving it.

I love the "I need this truck to pull my boat" justification. I see HUGE Super Duty Fords and Duramax GMs at the boat ramp pulling a 17 foot boat that a small SUV could easily pull.
The same guys that get decked out in camo, paint their face, then go sit in a deer condo with their rifle on a tripod shooting over a baited field.

What do you drive?
I drive a tundra to hunt or farm to hunt every weekend. But I guess I should drive a camary for that. Now answer my question, why does it matter what other people drive. This thread is dumb as hell. What if I just liked the conscience of throwing my kids ball crap in the bed of the truck. Maybe some just like being in a bigger vehicle to be safer. There is a reason my wife drives a full size suv and it’s not because she needs it. It’s because I like the added mass in a collision.

I discovered years ago that if a family member owns a truck it's the same as me owning a truck for the few times I actually need a truck.

I just think it’s dumb to talk about someone who just chooses to drive a truck. Talking about how they are compensating. It’s stupidity. Maybe it’s just what they want to drive. You are not paying for it so again answer my question, why do you give a crap?

Cause it means the world. If it didn't earth would implode on itself.

My first car was a 1967 British MGB. So I basically carried around a sports car love affair for most of my life. Owned 240/300/350/370z cars, two corvettes, several BMW 3 series, one porsche. (And I won't count my motorcycles.) Trucks and SUV's don't do it for me, but I know they serve useful purposes for many, so I don't condemn their choices.

Because they would not sell.
I believe they would because Honda and now Hyundai are making small pickups and they're selling. They saw the market. I saw two Hyundai Santa Cruzes this morning. Ford and Chevy are putting a lot into their midsized pickups. Tacoma is the hottest midsize truck out there. With the price of 1500's skyrocketing, it only makes sense to downsize.

My first car also was an MGB…1977 GT. Wish I still had it. Love British cars….now drive a Land Rover Discovery Sport….best driving car I’ve ever driven….and make all the wine and cheese and grey pompon jokes you can.

One thing that hurt the small truck market is when Congress put a provision in the IRS Code that allowed for a one year depreciation on large trucks…IIRC over a 1/2 ton. Businesses could deduct 100% of the cost of a new truck in the year it was purchased. A lot of business owners took advantage of this provision that lasted for around 8 years….some even started “businesses” to take advantage of it.

If Land Rover could build a reliable vehicle they would rule the auto market. They make great looking, great driving and great off road performing vehicles. Unfortunately, they tend to only be that way for around 70,000 miles and then they become repair nightmares.

You HAVE to maintain them on a regular basis or you are right. Mine has over 250,00 miles and still runs great. They aren’t that expensive if you maintain them, but can become very expensive very fast if you fail to do so. Much like the old Jaguars. Definitely can’t treat it like an American or Japanese car.

LandRovers are quite nice. I currently drive a Lexus Hybrid. An old man's car, you know.

For whatever reason, a Land Rover has always been my dream vehicle. But, I looked into buying one used several years back and a quick perusal of Rover forums online scared me off. It seems some people like them enough to put up with the reliability issues.

This is true but the maintenance is pretty expensive to keep up with if you do what you really need to do. Like a Jaguar mechanic told me in the 1990s "They are great cars but you'll have $100,000 in one at 100,000 miles". All the European makes are that way now. Mercedes and BMW used to be reliable, well engineered vehicles but they are grossly over engineered now and their build quality has gone down to Chrysler level. There is a reason European cars sell for 10-20% of the cost new after about 5 or 6 years.

What’s the most reliable car?
Used to be Toyota and Honda.

Would say they still are.
They are hard to beat for reliability.

Just about everything Honda puts an engine in seems bullet proof. My dad has had a number of Goldwing motorcycles over the years, riding them all over North America. He bought one used off a guy that had about 70,000 miles on it and rode it from SC to Alaska and back within about a month of buying it and kept it another couple of years with no issues. In the motorcycle world, a bike with 85,000 miles on it is very high mileage. But, as my dad says, nobody would think twice about buying a 6-cylinder Honda car with 85,000 miles on it. Why would a 6-cylinder Honda motorcycle with 85,000 miles be any different?

LOL! And they can’t back those short trailers down the boat ramp for $h-!!

It's a dang shame. I own a 2006 Dodge Dakota (garnet looking). Small truck with a V8. Thinking it's one of the last years they made them. Funny thing is the bed, although not that deep is 6'6" long. Longer than many larger trucks. Its a powerful little truck that's not afraid to do some heavy work... and I do mean it will get up and go. Beautiful lines in it's design as well. Ahead of it's time. Good thing too, because I don't think there will be a time I wont have it. Paid 12K out the door for it new with a lot of accessories.

Reviving this old thread, but I saw a commercial for a pickup truck with a power tailgate.

Sorry, but if you need a power tailgate, you definitely should not be driving pickup truck.

You mean to tell me you can lift a bunch of stuff into the bed of a pickup but then you need a power tailgate?

Not to mention, there's a great sense of satisfaction that comes from slamming that tailgate shut after hard day of loading/unloading.

It's like standing back and admiring your yard after you finish mowing it (you know we all do it) but instead hiring someone to mow your yard and then standing back and admiring it.

If I need something done, I'm probably not hiring the guy that is driving a 80K truck I can tell you that.

I drove a Nissan Double Cab 4cylinder, straight drive pick up for better part of 10yrs. Had AM/FM & A/C. You couldn't kill that truck if you wanted to.
Only downside, protection. Folded like a beer can if hit.. Woman barrels through red llight crumbled me like a piece of paper.
Today I drive 2005 Tacoma King Cab & love it. Showing 245,000 miles. Just replaced the engine w/ OEM engine, purrs like a kitten. Get asked if it's for sale all the time. Tell guys, you can't afford it.
I couldn't replace this truck for what it'd actually bring. One guy pushed me to sell, give me a price, everything got a price he says. $85,000 I finally shot back. Called me crazy, walked away!
He wasn't getting it for no amount of money.

Have you heard of a heated tailgate? It's available on <insert brand here> trucks so your hands don't get cold when you're pushing it 😯

I didn't include the brand to avoid setting off a truck brand war. Folks have strong feelings about their favorite truck brand.

I currently own a Sierra 1500. Previously I've owned three S-10s and a Tacoma. Towing my boat, towing U haul trailers, hauling building materials for major home improvements, moving my sons and sister multiple times, moving my late parent's belongings, hauling things to the landfill. I can't see myself not owning a truck unless I'm in a nursing home.
