My sons and I are going to Yellowstone before Memorial Day (stuff is just opening). Planning to stay in Gardiner a couple nights then in the park a couple more.

One of the things we enjoy is strenuous day hikes. Anyone know of any really good trails? Planning on probably doing Avalanche Peak, Bunsen Peak, maybe Sepulcher Mountain. Any right around the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone? Looks like the road to Mt Washburn will be closed then.

Also, is Lamar Valley worth going to (unique enough) if already seeing Hayden Valley?

Any other recommendations welcome. Thanks

Enjoy the trip. If you want to see wildlife..nothing beats Lamar Valley. However, I have never been to the park in late May, even though I have been there 8 times, so I don't know what the wildlife would be like at that time of the year.. Greatest place in the USA as far as I am concerned. Beware of snow run off that time of the year. Need to hear about your trip, especially on the state of Gardiner after the devastating flood that neat town went thru. As far as hikes, we did a few and my daughter found them on a hiking website...

Have some good friends and a colleague who live in the area (Livingston, Bozeman); I'll probe for some tips (colleague was even an extra in Yellowstone this season). I've been to Bozeman once and absolutely loved it. Drove to Moosejaw in February and it was spectacular - so vast and untouched. Cold as f*ck but still.

Moosejaw, Saskatchewan? What's up there?

Flying into BZN, looks like there's lots of interesting stuff there. Wish I had more time to explore there, Jackson Hole, and Grand Teton. Since this will be my first time to Yellowstone, wanted to maximize time in YNP (5 full days in the park, bookended by travel days).

In February? Mineral hot springs, Scottie’s Tournament of Hearts….

When you return, and you will, you need to do Grand Tetons and JH. Look me up and I will help you out.

Hayden and Lamar Valley are very different. Lamar is worth the trip.

@PrtLng Lion Two that stand out were the Grand Canyon Trail route in Yellowstone and the Cascade Canyon Trail in the majestic Grand Tetons. We were there a summer Before last and it was spectacular. We went on A solid hike each day but those two stand out in my memory bank.

As @Bkmtnittany1 mentions, keep the Grand Tetons in you destination list as well.

Keep a watch on snow during late May. That can be mud season for hiking as well. But if you keep an eye on the weather, you should be fine for some nice day hikes.

May weather could go any sort of way. For perspective, I was in YNP, standing across the Continental Divide, on the 23rd of July in four inches of snow. The wind was howling at about 35 MPH and the temperature was 31f. I had not brought along the correct clothing; it was 96f when I boarded my plane at the Pittsburgh airport.

Did Beartooth Pass into Red Lodge on a Friday once. Wanted to do the pass the next morning on our way to Cody. Pass was closed because of a snowstorm during the night. It was July 4th weekend!
