taken directly from the article Bold and Underlined for effect:

Bear hunting has become a popular activity in Pennsylvania and is seen as a way of managing the population. Thousands of bears are harvested in the state every year, with hunting season in 2019 seeing a record 4,653 bears killed.

Hunters are allowed to kill one individual per season.

According to PennLive, almost 1,200 black bears were killed in 2021 before the open season began.

I used to enjoy hunting with family for deer, turkey and grouse. About 25 years ago 5 of us were out hunting deer on the first day of rifle season. We were standing in the middle of a field talking and heard a few shots ring out on a wooded knoll just above us. Not more than a second or two later, we could hear the bullets flying directly over our heads. That is a strange experience hearing the bullets cutting through the air just above you. That first day of rifle season in the 80's and 90's used to sound like a war zone. It's no wonder more people don't get hit with stray bullets.

Wouldn’t the bullets beat the sound to you? I honestly don’t know what the deceleration is, but muzzle velocity is typically Mach 2 or so, no?

The initial "air resistance" sound was faint at first followed by a higher whistling sound that quickly faded into the distance. I'm sure that bullet was well past us by the time we heard it. It actually happened to me several other times over the years while in wooded areas.

Yes. The velocity of most ammo used in rifles hunters used for deer is three times the speed of sound.
