I don't think that's true. If there isn't a Pac-12 team in the CFP, the Rose Bowl takes the Pac-12 champ.

This game turned big time when it was 17-3 and USC got that fumble and then did nothing with it instead of going for the kill shots. Same thing happened in SLC when they let Utah off the hook. With Williams gimpy, the Utes defense is just teeing off knowing that he can't escape.
