Now that's a dedicated football fan!
I drank ×1000 the amount of alcohol I used to sterilize my wound so it was all good until the next day, when walking wasn't my friend. Luckily I had just gotten my tetanus shot for the first time in 30 years.

mine- kidney stone

I'd rather get a needle in the eye- and yes, I've had several of those
I lost a kidney to cancer, and as I was going through the process of trying to save it in the days before it was removed, my kidney decided to shutdown. Shutting down meant that fluid was going in, but not going out. I've experienced 2nd degree burns, but what I felt with my kidney was on another level; I didn't know pain like that existed. (BTW: I'm 9+ years cancer free and, as cancer goes, mine was nothing.)

Had two kidney stone episodes and a trip to the ER with inflamed gall bladder.
Those two were nasty until - like others have said - the morphine drip started.
Another painful situation is being a Penn State fan living in Ohio.

I've had a heart attack, guillain-barre syndrome, collapsed lung, a spinal tap, a herniated disc and a broken arm -- and none of that hurt as intensely as the time I slipped on the ice in my driveway and jammed my thumb onto a cinder block. Obviously all of those other things were far more concerning, but the intensely-focused pain of that bruised thumb is unquestionably the sharpest pain I've ever felt.

As someone else mentioned above, cutting the nail way back and then lancing it relieved the pressure and the pain was gone almost immediately, but for the couple of hours before a co-worker recommended that I do that, I was in abject misery.

Had a thumb smashed in a farming accident when I was younger. When I was in college I had a tooth dislodged during a basketball game and, upon the endodontist's direction, had to put it back in place with a tongue depressor.

Those were both terrible but I have a problem with a nerve in my face that flairs up every few years. It makes it feel like someone is trying to rip my teeth out with pliers. That's the worst pain that I have ever felt.

I’ve been lucky thus far in terms of physical pain, which is good because I’m probably in the lower half of the population in tolerance. The most total pain from one issue was probably a couple months of neuropathy from a pinched nerve in my shoulder region, aggravated by having once-proud rhomboids. I never regained 100% feeling in my left index finger from that whole 2006 thing.

Broken ribs for a chronic cougher isn’t fun, but those episodes lasted only a second or two at a time.

Sliding into second base in a softball game, my cleat caught, dislocating my left ankle causing my foot to rotate almost 180 degrees. The twisting tore ligaments and snapped my fibula. The bone didn’t go through the skin, but pretty much looked like a compound fracture. When the ambulance showed they said we can’t turn on the sirens ‘cause it’s wasn’t life threatening so it’ll take a while. When I got to Bryn Mawr hospital, the ER doc said the skin was so distended that he didn’t have time for a pain relief, so prepare for him to put the ankle back in place. The pain was so bad, but once he put it back in place, it felt so much better, despite the break. If you remember Jeff Bagwell’s breaking his leg crossing first base, it pretty much looked like that.

I love Bryn Mawr hospital! (Minus the parking situation)

I had open heart surgery to replace a faulty aortic valve. The day after the surgery the nurse pulled something from my stomach area. It felt like she was ripping barbed wire from my skin. I had not yet had any painkillers (because they told me you have to ASK for them)!

Great news Dave! I lost my right kidney to kidney cancer. Drove myself to the ER, I was in excruciating pain. In fact, worst pain in my life. Removed the kidney that night. Extreme pain for about a month. It’s been 21 years now for me and cancer free.

My other kidney shutdown and I just received a kidney transplant last year. So thankful!

Push-ups actually worked best for my sciatica, even better than stomach crunches. I still needed the cortisone pills, but as far as exercises went the push-ups worked best for me.
Interesting. I do have bad sciatica along with this round of back pain. I wouldn’t have guessed that push-ups might help. It’s probably a moot point for me for the time being, because even getting into a prone position facing downward is a no-go right now. Something to try a little further down the road, perhaps.

My sciatica emanates in my lower lumbar where the nerves come out and head towards the leg. The inside of the lumbar is narrow from bone overgrowth, which apparently is similar to arthritis. My dad had it and had the inside of the bone removed and was instantly pain free and remains that way more than ten years later (he's now 86). I would love to get that done but I'm not considered bad enough (yet) for the surgery. My grandfather also had sciatica, probably the same, but that went undiagnosed in the 50s and 60s. I last had treatment about 15 years ago, and I can usually alleviate my pain after a day or so when it flares up (knock on wood), but the underlying condition will eventually win out.

Right uretero-vessicle junction calculus -aka kidney stone. Much worse than the appendicitis and post-operative incisional pain I experienced at age 19 while a student at Penn State.

Just had emergency gangrene gall bladder removal surgery a couple weeks ago…the hours before I finally headed to the ER were no fun….pain relief when they hooked me up to morphine IV…
That's also number one on my list, was in intense pain for about a day before going to the ER. Unfortunately, the ER was busy and I had to lay on the waiting room floor in a fetal position for a few hours before being seen. Was admitted for surgery from the ER and stayed for three days until the infection had cleared sufficiently. Number two pain experience was acute appendicitis when I was a kid. Number three, tearing a calf muscle while playing tennis was pretty intense pain the moment it happened.

Kidney stone by far.
Second place would be when my knee had finally had enough and I didn't think I would make it down the mountain. Finally had to do the full knee replacement. The doctors incredulous quote was "You're skiing on this????"

I was replacing a 3/4" plywood floor back in 2007 and throwing it into a pile in my driveway outside with the nails still sticking out. As I threw the last sheet of 4' x 4' plywood, a nail caught my sleeve and pulled me towards the pile of nail infested wood. I stepped on one of pieces of plywood (nails up) and one protruded through my work boot, through my foot and came out the top of my foot. I immediately took a shower, washed it with alcohol, and drove to the bar to watch tOSU crush PSU. That was a painful day/week, but I've had much more painful things over the years.

Accidentally kicked a concrete step barefoot running up them. Caused blood to pool under the nail of my big toe and over the course of the next 2 days that pressure slowly pulled the nail up and out. Had it removed and it’s never grown back. But those two and a half days I didn’t sleep a minute.

2005 Michigan. My family still doesn't know how our TV survived my assault on it. My guess it survived because it didn't fit through the window
That was really bad. If not for that ending, no one would forget Michael Robinson in that game.

When my father died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack, in 1999. No physical ailment has come close.
Very sorry to hear, ro.
Had to be very difficult to deal with being in your early 30’s.

Yeah...worst part is, he had contacted me the day before, and I could not talk to him that day as I just started a new job. And then it slipped my mind to call him back.

Too many to count -- 19 operations total, some not so bad - others not so good
- heart attack 23 years ago with Right Coronary Artery completely closed down - 6 operations on heart with 4 stents in RCA
- left knee twice, now no medial meniscus and MCL useless
- kidney stone they could not find - morphine really put me out
- Father dying on Thanksgiving Day 1980 - failed open heart surgery - thankfully I had a chance to say 'I Love You'
- 8 year old grandson died in 2007 from heart disease Ped Cardio did not know about - ARVD

Although a recent kidney stone was horrendous…..it has to take second place to having my right kneecap dislocated during a Karate Tournament . fortunately , an Orthopedic Surgeon was competing on an nearby mat….saw the injury and reduced ( put back in place) the injury. He told me what he was going to do….I told him to go for it….two men held my shoulders to the mat while he snapped it back into place. Had a leg \ knee brace on for several months with rehab to follow . Took about 6 months before I felt back to normal. Have had zero knee issues since.

I have had cracked teeth, a broken leg, smashed fingers, heart bypass surgery, a collapsed lung, emergency surgery to insert a chest tube that was pulled out, burns, kicked in the nuts, peripheral neuropathy, a sliced arm, busted ribs, a 1000 lb metal dock ramp land on my big toe, and a throat infection so bad it looked like I had no neck.

None of those things touch the back pain I got from bending over to pick up a towel. A pinched nerve simply incapacitated me. I call it “white pain”, my entire body ignited with a blinding pain. You find out that there is no such thing as a doctor who is a back expert.

The one relief I had was at a chiropractors office. My last hope. I thought they were complete frauds. He put me face down on a table and stretched my spine by lowering the bottom part of the table on a hinge. I never experienced pleasure like that moment of pain release. I would have gone gay for him if he asked. I cried. From that moment I began to heal. It took time, but the pain only hits every couple years now and I know what to do when it does.

Bulging disc in the lumbar. Brutal

Yep. My sciatic nerve was pinched. Sharp pain up and down leg. Stretching worked for 20m then back to excruciating pain. I would collapse on bed when I got home. Surgery was absolutely the best choice. They recommended chiropractor daily which was complete waste of time. I had kidney stone but passes quickly..thank god. I still may put this all second to gall bladder attack. I spent 6 weeks having weekly attacks where it felt like someone was inflating your stomach and jabbing it with knife at same time. I would lay on floor crippled for 3 hours before it subsided. Impossible to relieve it.

Broke each collar bone twice, dislocated each shoulder twice, broke six ribs, broke each hand and cheekbone (full contact karate), tore all rotator tendons in right shoulder along with long-head bicep tendon and labrum as shoulder dislocated getting ready for nationals in power lifting, tore single tendon in left shoulder, broke ankle and four concussions. Tore ACL, MCL, and meniscus in wrestling. I was always very strong and fast and very un-athletic as I move full speed then crash and burn. Had my own coffee mug with my name on at the emergency room. But kidney stones were the worst.

Long suffering Jets fan - hopeful beyond hope after the draft only to come crashing down to the depths on Jets misery after their first two offensively offensive series in the first preseason game when the future of the franchise, the young 2nd year QB through a God-awful INT first series and then thought he was still playing in the Mountain West the 2nd series and decided to cut back towards the middle of the field on a scramble (instead of either throwing the ball away, or running out of bounds like any mature professional would have done) and hurt his knee on the cut back. He's not going to be a franchise QB so it'll be back to drawing board again. The pain and the misery continue with no end in sight.

Had a root canal in early 2006. Was in Hawaii prior to it and there was zero pain. Returned to Florida on a redeye Sunday night. Root canal was happening Tuesday. Monday night, it was defcon-2 with that tooth. Almost like 2 weeks of pain accumulated into one nite of hellfire. Hardly slept. Only silver lining was once the dentist went to work on me, I fell asleep so I barely noticed what was going on.

This reminds me of what I witnessed when my ten year old son was treated following a horrific accident.

Blood everywhere, front teeth h gone and a badly broken forearm.

We live ten minutes from the hospital, I got there in five.

All the way the boy apologized to me for the accident. All I could say was, “Son, I love you.”

In the ER they were going to set the arm and the nurse attempted to give him a shot to kill the pain. I don’t know why, but she could not find a vein.

My son held his injured arm up and said, “ Go ahead Doctor, just do it.” The doc looked at me and I nodded. In a few seconds it was done.

Later the doctor said he had never seen a child so brave, that grown men often pass out.

Sometimes you earn respect, the hard way.

although the offending board wasn’t “ground contact”, your experience is a reminder to maintain tetanus shots.

Combo major knee ACL / MCL tear on artificial turf at PSU. The initial pain dissipated after 30-45 seconds so I kept playing until my knee rotated again and more cartilage got torn.

The second episode was like having a knife stabbed into my knee.
