During the mid-1980's, Rafael Palmeiro was one of the most feared college hitters at Mississippi State and then later in Major League Baseball. Could his son Patrick Palmeiro also play college baseball in Starkville, a place Patrick has often visited with his family over the past decade or so?
Well, there is a possibility and one that Patrick Palmeiro is hoping for in the near future.

"People keep asking me if I have committed to Mississippi State," said Patrick Palmeiro. "But I haven't committed anywhere yet. I really want to go there and it would be incredible to play where my Dad did and try to live up to what he did. But they have not offered me yet and we just have to wait and see." Full Story

to expect our staff to (1) hand-write thank-yous, greetings, well-wishes, and sundry homoerotic communiques to half the male population of the US; and (2) Manually type missives to the entire college baseball coach's association about the vagaries of NCAA politics, and (3) coach our pussies to take strikes one and two; AND AT THE SAME TIME pretend to recruit.

Hell, it's not like this guy's Dad donated a shitload of coin for the construction of an IPF or anything.

Hopefully if we don't offer, and he goes somewhere else, this won't turn out Grisham-esque. J. Grisham has practically funded the UVA baseball program due to his son being scorned by McMahon (I believe it was PM) and choosing to play at UVA.

in the past, we could offer this kid books b/c he just wants an offer so he can know that he's wanted. I think its a given his dad can afford to send him to dear ol state. But now we have to offer 25% and we might not have that if his grades aren't scholarship worthy. Not to mention we can only have 30 on athletic aid.

We didn't set the world on fire with our recruiting in the fall so for Patrick not to get an offer over one of those others is ridiculous. Polk keeps in touch with Raffy so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here until I hear something else.

other than what I've read in the article.Having said that, if he really isn't good enough, having a "daddy's boy" on the team can create alot of dissent on a team if the players feel he's there because of daddy and not because of his ability. Hopefully that's what Polk was thinking, but that's the only reason I can think of not to offer the guy.

I'm not sure of how Grisham's career turned out at UVA, or how the team did while he was there. I'm not on the side of not offering the guy, but I'm just trying to conceive the possible reasons not to. You are right in that it seems like a no-brainer.

would he be any worse than some of the guys that are already on the team?

This guy apparently has offers, and he has a frame where he could put on muscle. He wants to come to State, I mean offer him!

I'm not sure why some people in this thread are assuming he is no good. According to the link, he is rated 9.5 out of 10, which means that he's between a potential top 10 round pick/ Top D1 prospect (9 rating) and a potential very high draft pick/ top D1 in the nation prospect (10 rating). I have no idea how Perfect Game came up with this ranking or how legit it is, but it certainly doesn't give me the impression that he sucks.

Edit to add: if he would grow a mustache like his old man, I bet he could get that final .5 points.

they base their rating in a very similar way that scouts rate the players. But, the numbers are different- they do it on a 1-10 scale, whereas I think MLB scouts go to 80 or something weird like that. I can't remember exactly. Anyway, their rankings are remarkably accurate- especially when compared to their cousins in the football recruiting world.

But I do think you hit on why Polk probably hasn't offered him- he doesn't want to compete with MLB for players. Of course, nowadays you pretty much have to, and schools are starting to get some pretty good players- see Lance Lynn.

A freaking scholarship is understood! Somebody needs to clear this **** up! Talk about dropping the ball if we screw up and dont get this kid. That would be like Michael Jordan's kid not playing for North Carolina! <sarcasm>

Huh? I'm not sure what you're talking about. I just checked through the last week's worth of posts on the board, and the only other time I found that I responded to you was here. I think you have me confused with someone else. And for the record, I have a problem with exclamation points, while you seem to particularly enjoy them. It's a trait Elaine Benes and I share.

My bad! I could have sworn you were doing some type of message board stalking! Disregard other smart *** comments I have made directed toward you. I am a grown man and I can admit my mistakes! (Most of the time)

I can tell! At least you haven't typed in all caps or used emoticons! You don't know Elaine Benes!? She's on Seinfeld!
