Pittsburgh is nation's No. 2 Best Pizza City, study claims

PITTSBURGH — When a survey ranks real high "Pittsburgh-style" pizza pie, that's amore.
What proud western Pennsylvanian wouldn't love hearing that a study rated our region the No. 2 Best Pizza city in the U.S.?
"Sorry, Philly. Your pizza is amazing. But it's the other side of the Commonwealth that has bragging rights for best pizza city in the Keystone State," read the study, sponsored by Rent.com, which measured a number of metrics. "In fact, Pittsburgh ranks No. 1 in the country with nearly 71 pizza restaurants for every 100,000 Pittsburghers. That's almost 3.9 per square mile, good for fifth in the U.S."
To determine the best cities for pizza from over 300 regions, the study considered accessibility based on number of pizza restaurants per square mile (density), number of pizza restaurants per 100,000 in population (per capita) and number of pizza restaurants as a proportion of all restaurants. While customer reviews were not analyzed, the study makes the point that only highest quality pizza places will stay in business.

In many ways, Pittsburgh is more Midwest than East Coast, the study noted, "and as such, the city has adopted its own style of pizza different from New York or Philly. On the coast, the sauce makes the pizza. In Pittsburgh as in much of the Midwest, it's all about the cheese.
Conway Pizza has the mounds of fresh mozzarella and thicker crust of a "Pittsburgh style pizza" as determined by a recent study ranking Pittsburgh No. 2 among Best Pizza Cities in the U.S.

“'Pittsburgh-style' pizza is a vessel for cheese," the study continues. "They pile mounds of fresh mozzarella high to satisfy a steel worker's appetite. And to support all that cheese, Pittsburgh pizza tends to offer a much thicker crust than usual. You can find great examples of this style at pizza spots like Fiori's Pizzaria (Brookline and Peters Township), Mineo's Pizza House (Squirrel Hill), Ephesus Pizza (Fourth Avenue, downtown) and, most famously, at Beto's Pizza (Beechview)."
The study also recommends trying the neighboring and locally popular Ohio Valley-style pizza, where the cheese (most often shredded provolone) goes on the pizza after cooking, uncooked and at room temperature.
Rent.com's analytics found Rochester, New York, to be the nation's No. 1 Pizza City, with New Haven, Connecticut, Philadelphia and Bridgeport, Connecticut, rounding out the top five.

More Beaver Co. pizza news: Antony's Pizzeria closes at Beaver Valley Mall; owner explains why
Consumer resource Rent.com also stuck more to its expertise by calculating the average one-bedroom apartment in Pittsburgh rents for $1,420 monthly.
Comparable cities on the Top-10 pizza list: Manchester, New Hampshire, $1,570; Worcester, Massachusetts, $1,212; Cambridge, Massachusetts $3,612; Buffalo, $1,431; Miami, $3,049; Bridgeport, $1,262; Philadelphia, $1,789; New Haven, $2,227 and Rochester, New York, $1,224.

I live near Pittsburgh and I've never heard of Pittsburgh style pizza. The "study" is based on the number of pizza restaurants and their accessibility. It even states "customer reviews were not analyzed". So Pittsburgh has a lot of pizza joints?? OK then.....

Growing up in western pa. and the pittsburgh area I remember a lot of mom and pop pizza joints which served the square pan pizza served by the slice or sometimes referred to as a “cut” of pizza. They did tend to have a lot of cheese and pepperoni was popular. Being pan pizzas the crust was thicker than new york pizza.

This is basically a simple math driven proclamation not about which pizza is best (it's best cities for access to pizza it seems); and agree with others - there is no 'Pittsburgh' style pizza. What is delicious and found in Western PA is what is more commonly known as 'Ohio Valley' style pizza. This is the square shaped thick but light crust, mounds of mozzarella, and diced pepperoni you find at places like Police Station Pizza (Ambridge, PA), Buzzi's (Rochester, PA - now closed :( ), and DiCarlo's (Steubenville, OH). I grew up in Beaver County so we did Buzzi's a ton - especially since you could order everything to cook at home. Thankfully, there is a winery in Aldie, VA (Quattro Goombas) whose owner is a Western PA native and Blackhawk HS grad (same as me) and he makes damn good Ohio Valley pizza that really stands out in the pizza wasteland that is Northern Virginia. They also make wine slushies (don't ask).

That's what we called Sicilian. Or maybe my idea of Sicilian pizza is wrong.

Interesting. For Old Forge Pizza, you ask for a cut and not a slice. I didn’t think that term was used anywhere else. You also order a tray of pizza versus a pie. Old Forge pizza also has a unique white pizza that’s double crusted.

“I’ll take two trays of Red and one White.”

I just posted this and titled it to stir things up! (like I always try to do)

Every town and city has GREAT local pizza!

You can't go wrong.

Just ask the locals!!

I used to live next-door to a girl who was the daughter'/owner of Mimo's pizza joints in Philly. (Yes, he was connected and I'll leave it at that!) The only pizza joint I know that had wall-to-wall carpeting and paneling in the back office!!

He practically fed me my entire junior year at PSU.

We had tubs of cheese/pasta/ sauce, etc.

We ate like kings and put on weight like a King too! LOL!!

I have to ask never been to the Burgh , but what is the signature food dish there ?
Is it the Primates sandwich, with the cole slaw & fries.

Best Way pizza in Central PA is also ordered by the "cut." 10 cuts for our family almost every Friday night!

Mineo’s pizza was amazing when I last had it. Loved it with meatball and mushroom.

New York style with the thin crust and tasty sauce is great too.

So much pie, too little time.

I know that look of trepidation. And why shouldn't she. It looks like a Chef Boyardee Pizza Box Kit pizza juiced with extra yeast.
