What will it look like?

Twenty more years at the current rate of capital expenditures spending, I foresee Old Main being razed and replaced by something similar to this with it dedicated to Neeli Bendapudi honoring her as PSU's 19th president.

You have to pay more for a quality leaderer in a challenging environment.

Are you sure that Beni is a 'leader' for any challenging environment? I am not impressed with her stance including expenses for DEI +b. The key issue for many is 'Performance' - not making sure a student is not 'offended'.

On a more positive note, Leonard S. Fiore Construction is making progress on the Nittany Lion Inn renovation for the Scholar Hotel Group. The last I heard, they hope to be open by August 2024.
This is how I envision some of the new high rise apartment buildings in 20 years. Students are going to get tired of the overpriced and crappy management of them and the store fronts will never fill. There seems to be an over supply of apartments these days, which is no surprise. BTW, I have noticed many athletes living in the new one on Whitehall road that was once PSU property that was sold to Toll Brothers which there were some environmental protests about because of a well located downhill from. So now, PSU is most likely paying the rents back to Toll Bros to house athletes. I could be completely wrong about this but these have been my observations living in the area.

University Park/State College will look more like a disposable city with zero character and branch campuses will likely consolidate (unless the political power is there to keep them up and running like it is with Dickinson Law). I don't think applications or enrollment will be an issue, but really, we should be spending less on athletics. Way too many programs that offer nothing in the way of ROI. Make them club sports. Need to be smart about large investments on campus; you see what happened to WVU - they have declining applications and despite that Gee thought it was a good idea to spend, spend, spend (and now he just lost a vote of no confidence from faculty). Now, the flagship university of the state is embarrassingly forced to cut programs and thus opportunities for its citizens. Pennsylvania isn't there...yet, but could be.

In 20 years it will look a little different. In 50 years you can bet the bank that most universities will look very different.

It is reported that the Scholar Group is spending only $10 million on the NLI Reno... that doesn't seem like much given the pre-covid condition of the place.

"Brandeis intends to pour more than $10 million into renovating the historic Nittany Lion Inn". https://finance.yahoo.com/news/5-star-experience-owner-talks-090000142.html

Per Wiki, the last/previous renovation was....

The renovations were completed in January 1992 by Biehn Construction at a cost of $15,000,000 (equivalent to $33,599,083 in 2022)

No oversupply. Either book this week or you will be living in Boalsburg.

Going to disagree with ya there Wink. This is old school thinking, plenty of places in town are vacant even now. If the slum lords were smart, they would rent out the empty places for football weekends.

I picked shut down, but as a joke. I really hope it does get smaller by consolidating some branch campuses but keep the programs they currently have and rather than building more, they should focus more on upgrading current buildings like they are doing with the dorms. Hopefully the state gov't will kick in some more cash and they can cut costs (hahaha) so its not so damn expensive.

My whole family and my wife's mom and sis all went to PSU. We talked about purchasing a second home up there around 7 or 8 years ago as we had nieces and nephews who were entering middle school and may want to go to PSU who could potentially use it and we would only come up as we chose. But now I dont think any of them are going to PSU just due to the financials, they are all able to get way more financial aid at other colleges.
