Berge looked very good. 👍
Have to keep in mind that his opponent was unranked. Going forward, that's likely to be the exception not the rule. But I think the combination of Berge at 157 and Edsell at 165 gives PSU its best opportunity for points at those two weight classes.

The Nomad is wrong, that's not the only path for Brady to pick up 6 matches at B1Gs. Brady had 6 matches last year at BIGs, won the Round of 16, lost in quarters and then four more in the Consis to take 6th.
That’s great. This is well outside my limited scope of knowledge. So is Brady better off winning B1Gs or getting 6 matches?

Bottom line. If Berge wrestles with a mean streak he can beat anyone at 157. He can’t be Mr. Nice guy against the better guys. He found that out against Alex M when we wrestled Iowa.

I am confused where did the 8 matches for the coaches ranking come from. I can only find 5 match minimum.

Lobdell is full of crap -- which is what he does when not DMing female wrestlers.

He didn't read or misrepresented the rules. The very first criterion says .700 overall win % -- this includes Berge's 165 matches. Berge is now 5-1. If he goes 2-2 at B10s, he meets this criterion.

Here is the full at-large eligibility criteria list with link:
https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/ch.../2021-22D1MWR_QualifierAllocationCriteria.pdf
Wrestlers that meet two or more of the 'at-large consideration standards will be eligible for at-large selection. Minimum standards include:
.700 overall winning percentage --> needs to go 2-2 or better at B10s
.700 Division I winning percentage at the weight class --> 8-match min, needs to go 4-2 or better at B10s
Top 33 RPI (taken after the qualifying tournaments) --> 15-match min, cannot meet
Top 33 Coaches Ranking (Taken after the qualifying tournament) --> depends upon B10 performance
One win against a wrestler who qualified for the National Tournament --> already beat Amine (note, current weight not specified in rule)
Qualifying event placement one below AQ --> TBD

Still, Berge would be best served by qualifying outright. The at-large selection criteria are not in his favor (see p. 7):
https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/wrestling/d1/men/D1MWR_SelectionsProcess.pdf
SELECTION CRITERIA
• Head-to-Head Competition --> likely no matches
• Quality Wins --> Amine if allowable (current weight not specified); otherwise only at B10s
• Coaches Rank --> TBD
• Conference tournament placement --> TBD
• Results vs. common opponents --> likely none
• Win percentage --> see above, likely in his favor if he gets to 8 matches (current weight not specified)

Just like on the mat: take the decision away from the refs.

Win one of the B10's allocated spots, and then at-large becomes somebody else's problem.

If he wins the conference tourney, he's an Auto Qualifier. If he doesn't win it and has less than 8 matches at 57, I believe he'll need to be selected as an At Large selection to even make nationals. Jo Jo Smith had a similar situation in '19 and was seeded 33rd, despite be a 2X AA.

Here's the Selection Criteria Grid to read thru and let us know your thoughts :)

Wouldn't he need the 8 matches at 157 to receive an AQ spot?
Here's the grid: https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/ch.../2021-22D1MWR_QualifierAllocationCriteria.pdf
That's not my point.

You're right that he would need 8 matches at 157 to satisfy the Win % criterion for at AQ -- but he would also need RPI (not enough matches) and a Coaches' Poll ranking (which he isn't getting at 157 today).

But my point is: he needs to just win at B10s, and steal the spot that somebody else earned for the conference.

Okay. How many spots are they taking at 157 from the Big ten tournament ? I’m sure he can finish top 2 or 3.

First of all, thanks to all for the input and clarification.

Can I take a shot at interpretation?
1. Win B1Gs and you’re AQ regardless.
2. If he gets 6 matches at B1Gs AND finishes 2nd-7th (assuming 7 AQ spots), then he’s in?
3. If he doesn’t get 6 matches (must go 2-2) AND doesn’t win B1Gs, he’ll have to hope for at large bid, which means … well, we’ll have to hope.

If I’m still wrong and this requires a restatement of above, don’t worry, I’m happy to just root for him and see where the chips fall!!!
