in student tuition costs and University President salary. Many times i have heard how U Michigan is so superior to PSU academically....yet their President's salary is less than PSU? I also heard PSU had a hiring freeze and major cost cutting initiative....yet the BOT is handing Nelli a $200,000 increase? I feel ALL PSU administrators salaries need to be frozen as well UNTIL the school's academic standards return to past levels of excellence. Seems strange we charge more and pay more (to administration) yet are rated academically near the bottom of the B1G.

Neeli has a very challenging job. You have to pay more to get more.

o_O

To schedule an appointment with Neeli:

"Do I have to pay a deposit?"

"Should I pay for booking in advance?"

It takes $$$ to lure a leader from Luh-ville.

SHE accepted the position....i have no problem with that....but a $200,000 raise after one year seems excessive when cost cutting is a priority.
Sounds like this was agreed upon when hired… a stay bonus of sorts but she’s done nothing in her two years here to warrant an increase. Her donation is self motivated and not a sincere gesture. She is tone deaf like the rest of them.

Penn State Board of Trustees engages President Bendapudi for the long term

Board rates presidential performance above expectations; approves rolling contract for president, evidence of long-term commitment to her leadership

“UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi declined any increase in her annual base salary following a positive review of her performance by the University Board of Trustees, in which she was praised for establishing challenging goals and executing difficult decisions to achieve them – while overseeing one of the most complex academic research enterprises in the nation.

The board augmented both Bendapudi's deferred compensation to better align with market data related to the scope of responsibilities, and her completion bonus starting in 2027. Her base salary remains the same.

“In evaluating President Bendapudi’s performance, it was clear that her dedication to making Penn State a model university for student success has been outstanding, as demonstrated by her many initiatives and tireless efforts toward this goal,” said Board Chair Matthew Schuyler. “In this demanding era for all of higher education, which requires presidents to set and execute transformational goals, Neeli’s decisive leadership — marked by foresight and willingness to make tough, but necessary, decisions — ensures Penn State's continued prominence as a world-class institution.”

The full board voted Friday (Feb. 16) on the unanimous recommendations of the Subcommittee on Compensation. Key changes include a move to a rolling or evergreen contract, meaning there is an opportunity for a continual five-year contract to be in place. This strategic decision is an indicator of the board’s long-term commitment to and support of Bendapudi’s leadership at Penn State, according to Schuyler.”

Hiring freezes, layoffs, commonwealth campuses gutted for thee but not for Neeli. And OBTW she has no performance goals, only the ones she decided on by herself. After tax deduction and this raise, her 'donation' is a net gain for her. Sort of like throwing crumbs to the peasants when you're a baker yourself.

Doesn’t the post above yours say she declined the raise?

Current comp. Her deferred comp increase by $205K p.a. She also gets a lump sum payment of $1.5mm at her tenth anniversary ($1.325mm at five).

The ratings of other BIG schools are inflated by the polical leanings of the reviewers. Self promoting left of center reviewers elevate the Meatchickens and Madison Cow milkers over PSU and Indiana, schools that are known to produce better more coveted private sector employees across more professional fields than just law and social sciences. The WSJ routinely identifies PSU as a top recrutiing destination of the private sector and as long as that is the case, Nittany Nation does not need to apologize for the cost of its education, IMHO.

Wall Street Journal's latest rankings have PSU 220th... ahead of only 2 other Big Ten universities:

You may be fondly recalling the WSJ article from a dozen or so years ago, which called PSU the "Best place for employers to find new graduates" (or something to that effect).
That was a long, long time ago. Things have changed a lot - including the WSJ's view vav PSU - since then.

I agree with everything you wrote except the cost of the education part.

Gang, the university is in trouble and World University and bloated committees ain't gonna save it. A lot of changes are needed.
