For those who viewed the match live, should Lee and Edsell won their matches? It sounds like Joe Lee should have been more aggressive and Creighton Edsell ran out of gas in his match.
Joe Lee did one of those head scratcher moves. Tried to go double overs when it wasn’t needed and gave up a TD, putting him in a hole early. He also struggled on bottom, but I can’t remember if he gave up the riding point. He kept it close, but ran out of gas at the end. Edsell was close and pushing in the third, but ran out of time; he was really close. Don’t see either giving us points at nationals at this point, but I know we’re a ways out from that.

If you remember Nick did the same thing when a true freshman. Joe needs to be smarter on mat awareness and score. He will improve. Just does a lot of dump **** right now. It’s a fixable problem.

Edsell's opponent, Julian Ramirez, is ranked #9, and was quite accomplished in high school. I think Edsell just encountered a better wrestler. I disagree with the claim that Edsell ran out of gas. He got a TD late in the 3rd period, and was working hard to get another one when the buzzer sounded. He only had 22 sec left after Ramirez escaped to get that final TD, and Ramirez wrestled those final seconds very smart.

Lee was in his 1st match of the season, and has been injured. None of us knew what to expect. Lee got a quick TD. In the 2nd period, after he gave up the esc he got taken down, and ridden out. In the 3rd period, Joe was quite active, but Yapoujian was smart, and didn't give him a lot of opportunities.

Thanks Tom for your assessment. Do you think we stay with Edsell for the season at 165? Any possibility that we see Facundo this year?

True freshman reference ??? Yeah, another 3 years in the program and he'll start to get it.

That said it's his first match back. I think Joe is our best option going forward.

125, 157, and 165 is killing us right now. We have help coming at 125. Think Joe Lee improves. Blame PSU admission for not having Evan Wick at 165. Kid has outscored the Iowa kid the last 3 years at Nationals and just beat the returning National Champion from Stanford last week. Will see. Very tough match tomorrow night. AZ State matches up really well with us. Will see.

We can regally dissect the team / match after tomorrow s dual w ASU! Good point in the season to do so and evaluate where we are. Let s get that one v ASU first! . Let s Go!!

CStar, AB, Max and Kerk clutch! Big time wins. Great experience . We won!!! RBY and Nick did all they could to max bonus. Refs have to make other guys wrestle. 6-0 hole to start a problem. Beau vs Yianni great experience. He s getting there imo. Looks more active. Will eventually finish! Yianni s a different animal. 165 Edsall all heart. Close at the end. He needs more in his arsenal. Ramirez good. Idk 157? Joe ? I say go w Negron . Kid was right there As he was w Humphreys. W Cael and co he can get there . Teemer 157 ASU tough kid from Long Beach , LI . Negron from N Babylon . Sect 8 NY v Sect 11 NY. Negron raw but will be fearless and go at him. TB not a good match up v Teemer.

I like the way we match up w ASU. Dean at 197 I like and Kerk has some unfinished business! These will be key. Plus bonus and not giving up bonus.

Yes! We can improve. We have areas to work on, absolutely. Team and coaches are aware. Can call them holes if you want but I have faith we can keep our eye on the prize in March. Drew will be a big boost @ 125! Decisions / changes may need to be made. Improvement needs to continue!
Keep the faith boys! Let s keep perspective. God and Cael have got this! It s Dec 20th. Anyone going negative ( I know “u r being realistic” -I get it ) , wanna get off the train, have at it. Critique is fine and yes if Nationals today we don t win. Trust the process. Lotta parity out there and all teams w issues.

Shout out to board member Nothingmeaningful : Your Cornell team young and good. Great performance . With that you d beat anyone but Penn State! Seriously, congrats on a great effort! CBev

Can't give up bonus v Az. State and we need bonus.
Hey, we protected our seeds at 133, 141, 174, 184, and Hwt. Losing to Yianni shouldn't hurt much.

I think Michael Beard also had an exhibition, and won by TF, but I don't have details (actual score, opponent, etc.)

To those who are unhappy with our 157 and 165 pounders and suggest we get transfers ASAP, please indicate WHO in the transfer portal you desire. Also keep in mind that programs have 9.9 scholarships/year to provide (although I do believe Covid has messed with that) and that we have studs Shayne Van Ness and Alex Facundo waiting in the wings.

Get on board with who we’ve got, but they ain’t Nolf and Cenzo. I still think Joe Lee and even Matt Lee could get in the picture.
We gotta pay more than an a volunteer coaching spot at Army, right?

Like Joe. Mental mistakes . Must be more to this story . He s been in the program a long time. Grey and RS yrs , plus last year. I hope he gets it all together but ? the strategy - big throws or bust. Not coming from Cael. I ll give some time.
But Don t count out Negron. He s talented but raw. ? Is can he get to where he needs to be this year? Idk.

I enjoy every dual, but I never worry about a match in December. If I've learned anything since CS took the reigns of the program it's that you compete every chance that you can, but the season is just a long process to get ready for March.

ASU will be a real challenge, but the team is still a work in progress. The 4 PSU wrestlers that were National Champs last year are a given. Dean and Kerk can compete with anyone in the country. Bartlett has a lot of tools, but it's early in his career and he's still working things out.

Exactly. This is where score and mat awareness comes into play. Joe has a 15 second brain lapse it seems against better competition. I know that can be worked on in LIVE situations in practice. Give him 30 second situations in practice. It works….

AK, Fear nothing but fear itself. I think we match up well . What matches specifically worry you?
Parco v Beau is big. I ll take Beau.
Kerk has unfinished business v Schultz ! He s ready to dole it out!
CStar , AB and Nick!
RBY v McGee- yes good wrestler but who d u rather have?
Max v Nordfleet! Max!
Key is limit Courtney to a MD!( Drew can t get here quick enough). Let s Go Campbell. Teemer needs a fighter v him. Negron! Valencia and Edsall. Creighton must wrestle tough and strategically.

Limit bonus and get bonus where we can. Tough match yes. It s exactly what this team needs. Could we lose ? Yes. Bring it on . I like our chances! Let s Go!

Lol. Yes hope to have Drew within the next couple weeks in the lineup. Ar State is ranked #3 gonna be tough tomorrow night. We gotta be at our best. Your right limit the bonus and get the bonus with our better guys. Love to see Kirk get back up to 250 by March. He needs on the Anthony Cassar weight and Calorie program for the next 60 days for real. He’s only weighing 230 right now. Cael wants him at least 245 by the Big ten tournament. He gets there he can win a National Championship….

oops. When I wrote that, I thought it was wrong, and meant to change it. Alas, I had a slew of windows open trying to find interesting content about the dual, and didn't check the # before I posted. My mistake.

I'm with Tom here--Edsell is gonna be fine. Ramirez just beat the defending national champ a few weeks ago, so he's clearly a podium threat and Edsell was right there at the end. Cael is gonna have the team in top form by March.

Joe has the tools BUT must get SMARTER during matches. Like score and where he’s at on the mat.
Joe looked like he did last year. Goes for a failed big throw. No offense and cant get off the bottom. He hasn't looked good fro 2 years. I think tonight was his last hooray at 157. I'd rather watch Tony or Terrell.

i hink Edsell is a solid and competitive wrestler. He has talent. Not flashy or explosive. Keeps his matches close and has success against lower ranked guys. Come March, I think he could qualify for NCAAs ,but I dont see him scoring points at 165.

Cornell has a really good team. Too bad we couldn't have landed Vito. I think Vito (and Suriano) are the only ones that have a shot at Spencer Lee. I actual like Vito's chances.

Based on UNI and Cornell matches at 157 for Penn State, I think Tony Negron will "get it" sooner this season than Joe Lee will.

Agree. Based on last night and thus far. Pretty sure Byers even said something like, Joe hasn t been doing well in the room. ? . Teemer will bring it tonite. I d go Negron! Unless Cael thinks TB matches up better and can keep it close? Teemer is a talent. You need to out “ bully” him and get into his head. Can be inconsistent given those things. Get him distracted and off his game. Negron will make it a street fight. But I ll leave it to Cael . Keep the faith.
