Purely hypothetical: Would Rattler sit out a bowl game?

Saw a post from Brad Crawford on FB that if we miraculously won out, it would likely give us the chance to see Sellers first start in the bowl game.

Based on Rattler's M.O. since he's been here, though, I seriously don't see him sitting out a bowl game. He's been through too much with the team and he has truly exemplified a genuine team-first mentality his entire time here. He recently made a very strong statement about being a Gamecock. I would just be surprised if he did that. He just seems like a baller who wants to play football.

I would frankly be surprised if he were to sit-out a bowl game - for the reasons you listed.

And particularly with how hard this team would have gutted it out just to get a bowl game, I really don't see him ducking it.

I think the coaches would ask him to sit out. Why risk his NFL career for a win in Shreveport. A bowl would be huge for LaNorris though.

Tough one. I realize it is a hypothetical question. I seriously doubt a bowl game is in the cards this year. However, I'm thinking he would be willing to play.

IMHO, SR has done great things for SC but I would not expect or hold it against him if he did not play in the bowl game. I want to win but he has millions on the line. Sellers and Doty, let the competition begin.

This.
With our OL he could possibly risk a significant amount of money for his future. Loyalty to one's teammates and school is one thing, securing your financial future significantly outweighs those considerations.

He could possibly be risking injury and future money by playing this week. Are you suggesting he just mail it in and sit out the rest of the games? I don't understand the difference in playing this weekend and playing in a bowl. If you are part of a team then you play. Or you quit your team.

Every year our fans start asking these hypotheticals. Why? It just encourages players to think about it. Don`t think Rattler is that kind of player. But why do we want to eat or own, i.e. we will hear that kind of crap and so and so should transfer, etc. Not a good way to try and build on what we`ve got when we try to run them off early.

Loser mentality, which I don't see rattler having.

Why even bring this up? He's gonna do what he's gonna do. When his decision - if he needs to make one - is determined, time will have come to talk about it.

Shane Beamer uses any and every opportunity to motivate. A bowl W (if it comes to that) after the start we had would be HUGE to him and this program. I think he would have a few packages for Sellers. But I don't think there's any way in hell Beamer asks Ratt not to play.

I don't see Ratt voluntarily sitting out either. That dude has been the consummate teammate and leader.

.
I could see Spencer playing if he thought it would boost draft stock. Don't forget they told one of the corners last year it wasn't worth him playing in the bowl game. So, they have a history of evaluating whether it makes sense for a player to play or not.

I mean if this is all that matters then he should just sit from here on out. Playing against Vanderbilt does nothing for him professionally.

The question is not SHOULD he it’s do you think he WOULD.

I just don’t think he would because he has demonstrated that he is the consummate team first guy.

He has convinced me that it is not in his DNA to sit out anything related to this Gamecock football team, but I would hate for him risk his NFL future for a low-level bowl game.

yes, for as much as he’s poured into these last two seasons, I just don’t think he wants his parting memory to be sitting out a bowl game

agree, and it could happen in any of the last 3 regular season games and the bowl would be just another game, so I don't see him voluntarily sitting out.
It would just be heartbreaking if it happened.

I would have no problem if he chose to skip a 6-6 level bowl game and started his draft prep. I half expect it if the scenario came to be. Right now it is most important for this program, that we see XL and Rattler get drafted in the first round, or second at worse, rather than win the Papa John’s or whatever Bowl.

Ratt ain't going in the 1st or 2nd. I think he's still viewed as inconsistent. Great at home, not good on the road. PFF currently has him as the 103rd pick. This is their top 10 QBs for 2024:

Caleb Williams
Drake Maye
Bo Nix
Michael Penix
Riley Leonard
JJ McCarthy
Shedeur Sanders
Michael Pratt
Jayden Daniels
Quinn Ewers

The 2025 class looks much more friendly, but you never know who is going to pop up as well.

There is considerable precedence of players opting out of the lower bowl games when they are 1st/2nd round draft picks. There are only a few players I can think of that have opted out of their final season to prepare for the draft. SR needs to put together a consistent season after his inconsistencies under Satt, and I think he's proving that. The bowl game we get probably won't move the draft needle one way or the other.

I don’t think he looks at it any sense as preparing for the draft. He’s just shown himself to be a team first guy all the way, and I don’t see him shoving that aside for the bowl game.

This right here. He really needs to stay one more year. Much different QB class next year.

No
This question was concerning a bowl game, not the regular season.

Yep, and I'll admit that earlier on I was convinced there's no way he'd stay. Just seemed like a foregone conclusion. But the more I've thought about it, the more projections I see for other QBs, I think there's a great chance he stays. 3rd round picks are going to range from $800K-$1M/yr for 4 years. Sounds like he's already making more than that.

It's inane.

You’re expecting too much from a sports forum. It’s no different than speculating about where a recruit might commit, what offseason coaching changes there should be or might be or how we think a game might go. A good portion of the posts made by every poster here are speculation.

Wr talk about what we think might happen. Then we talk about what did happen. That’s really just life in general. Not only sports.

Not gonna make a bowl game but if we did, the best thing that could happen would be for Rattler to sit out and let Sellers get a real game under his belt before taking over next year.
