Do they have to meet any kind of academic benchmarks in college to remain eligible, particularly during the spring semester? If a player knows he's leaving after his freshman season, can he just mail it in academically in the spring semester and flunk everything? Especially once the season's over, does he even have to bother going to class? I assume there must be something in the scholarship offer that stipulates he at least has to stick around to attend classes? But beyond that, do they even have to bother doing any academic work?

Don't know, just assuming that for spring semester, he would have to be in good standing following the fall semester.

So a basketball guy basically has to take one semester of gimme classes.

A football transfer? I'm guessing if he KNOWS he's leaving, he doesn't have to do much of anything. Would fall grades come out by conference title game time?

Yeah, with opt-outs, a football transfer doesn't have to do squat. For 2021, the SECCG was on 12/5. At USC, final exams were 2/6-2/13. I'd imagine most other SEC schools are fairly similar, so final grades would not come out until after the conference championship For most, it would only impact bowl season, but the player would most likely opt out anyway.

Sounds like colleges need to tighten up their scholarship agreements but if only some did it could hinder recruiting. Maybe more of a conference or NCAA thing.

I suppose it’s just an inherent flaw in the one-and-done and transfer system with no way to fix it.
