Question for old-time pre-BIG 10 Penn State road trip warriors - do you miss the old foes and trips? We have West Virginia coming up as a road trip in 2024 I believe, but namely back then: Syracuse, Boston College, Army, Navy. Do you miss those making those trips and what were your likes/dislikes about those trips?

Yes! Loved going to Pitt in the old Oakland Stadium, West Virginia mostly in the old downtown stadium, Syracuse in Archbold, Maryland, North Carolina State in Raleigh, Kentucky, Navy, Army and even Nebraska, Minnesota, and USC. Loved them all because they were different.
I forgot Rutgers, Iowa, Michigan

Embrace that Penn State is embraced by its (mostly) midwestern conference brethren.

Went to PSU-WVU game at WVU in 86. Was spat on by an old lady and some drunk dude tried to light my Penn State shirt on fire. On the opposite end of the spectrum were trips to games at Syracuse, Alabama, and Notre Dame, all between 86 and 91. Those three were great experiences. Well, at least what I remember of them.

Syracuse, Boston College, Notre Dame were great trips. WVU and Pitt, not so much.

During 40 years of season tickets I made a lot of road trips and, in many ways, enjoyed them more than home games. Notre Dame, Navy, Syracuse, WVU, OSU before the BigTen, Kentucky, Maryland, Temple, Cincinnati, Rutgers. Many of those were multiple trips over the years. Two Kentucky trips were the most enjoyable, Notre Dame the most memorable. Of course, college football was a different game in those days. Far fewer games were televised and if you didn't see a game in person you most likely followed it on the radio. It was generally regional, more idealistic, less commercial. I loved the game then. Today, not so much. After all the years, and all the memories, I doubt I will ever again watch a college game in person.

I say what I say selfishly. Raise your hand by liking my post if you’d like to break bread and wine with fair at a STATE tailgate
I will like that just for being creative, but I doubt you will get many other likes for the suggestion. Regardless, it is an academic exercise because it will never happen. Well, it could happen if the event were hosted by Diane Lane.

Then Joe will be disappointed. Actually. He will be pleased for I am true to myself. That said, I must join my wife for guitar practice. Since giving up college football, and most spectator sports, I have taken up the guitar and painting. Rather than watch, I am a participant. I am decent at the former, not so great at the latter, but both give me bring me joy in the effort.

The people who go to BC don't even make the trip to BC for their games anymore.

I'll save you the trouble of the experience. "I hate this ... I'm going to go play pinochle with my wife and her friends. My friends at Pitt assure me their tailgating is far superior to this experience."

Only PSU road game I’ve attended was ‘81 North Carolina State in Raleigh. Also was the last PSU game I attended. Last game at SC for me was in 1970.
Wish we had some games reasonably close enough for a day trip.
Couple years ago it seems we had Va Tech on the schedule but got cancelled. Was hoping for something more permanent, but I guess not. 🙁

Years ago I went to a game at the old Pitt stadium. Our tickets were in row 8. We started from the concourse level, and walked down row by row, til we got to our seats in the front row.

Yes, Row 8 was the front row. Only Pitt would start numbering from the back.

Is the first floor of the Cathedral of Illiteracy floor 8? Asking for a friend.

How long has it been since we played at Annapolis or West Point, fifty years?
Off the top:
Annapolis 1967? Maybe 1969?
Army 1970? Maybe 1974?
Your guess of 50 years is very close, but low, I believe.

An October trip to West Point is as much or more for the beauty of the area than the game itself.

Some road trips were great fun, some were really more about the game and not so much about seeing the campus or area, and others were forgettable all around. I miss taking trips with a group of friends who all had a high level of interest in PSU football.

Of the pre-B1G road trips, the ones I'd like to see become available again in the OOC schedule would include ND, UVa, NC State, maybe Bama post-Saban. Bama fans are terrific hosts.

A few more ACC (southern schools)/SEC home-and-homes vs. beatable or even-strength teams who have an interesting football history would be welcome additions that would draw my interest in taking a road trip. As it stands, playing the likes of Delaware and UMass at home, I'm not even sure I'm going to to those games, so an intriguing road trip becomes even more appealing.

All the best to her. My wife and I do water colors and acrylics, favoring the latter. We've each done about 20 since we started 5 years ago. Basic stuff. Outdoor scenes mostly. We love it.
We do the painting and guitar together and I might suggest that you join your wife in painting. The end result is not important. The joy is in the effort and in doing it together.

can remember going to west point in the mid-70s. drove to nyc, then caught circle line ferry for a floating tailgate run by a local alumni group. good food & drink, an absolutely gorgeous day in the 70s, with stunning foliage. returned to a great dinner in nyc after game which we won:D.

Interesting what was her emphasis? I think both of you are around my time at State. I was a BFA in Art.
I don't recall you mentioning that before. I had you pegged as a musician and perhaps you are that as well.

Allowing her to monopolize this front and center space is the extent of my effort. I’ll be golfing and drinking while she van goes

Moms is 39yo she graduated in 87
Impressive to graduate from PSU at the age of 4 or 5.

I would assume it would be daunting to handle college level material when you can barely walk, talk and are soiling yourself. Was her first painting a Jackson Pollock in her diaper?

Did you guys start dating at PSU by any chance?
