I can't remember if the final score by Joe Jackson's td, was an onside kick on a bounce or direct caught on the fly.
In the 75 Cotton Bowl vs. Baylor.

From The Waco Tribune Herald, a review of the game:

But still full of fight, the Bears tried for one last miracle. The effort blew up in their faces. They tried an onside kick, a bouncer delivered on a slant toward the east sideline. As the Bears rushed toward the ball, hoping to recover, Penn State linebacker Joe Jackson rushed forward and fielded the ball on the bounce and never missed a step.

Don’t know how many times an onside kick gets returned tor a TD, but we saw Ted Kwalick do it in ‘68 against Army. We only beat Army 28-24.

Kind of strange finish. Army scored to make it 22-17 with about 2 minutes to go. Tried the onside kick, Kwalick scoops and gets the TD and Army still scored again after we kicked off.

Didn’t Temple try it a few years ago after a safety and it was run back for a TD? It was the kid that got into a fistfight downtown.

They just don’t write like that anymore, do they?

They pretty much had unbeatable Oklahoma on the ropes in '85, it was 18-10 and Penn State tried an onside kick. Oklahoma caught it and ran for the touchdown and a 25-10 win.

Bruce, not sure you are remembering it correctly. Oklahoma was ahead 19-10 when Manca missed a short FG attempt with about 2 minutes left in the game.

Sooners got the ball at their 20 and then some RB (they ran the Wishbone then, and I can't remember all the names of their RBs) ran like 60 or 70 yards for a TD. They missed the XP and beat us 25-10.

Had Manca made that FG, then PSU could have tried an onside kick at 19-13 for a chance to win it 20-19. But I think when he missed it, the defense, which was playing superbly all night, just deflated and surrendered the long TD run.

Up to that point in the game, the longest run from scrimmage by a Sooner back was under 20 yards, something they had previously done all season long against everyone they played. I think Shane Conlan was assigned OU QB Hollieway and held him to 1 yard rushing total.

I will admit that my memory here might, also, be subject to some errors in yards and time, but not in score.
