What do our Oline and Dline look like for the future? These are the positions that win football games. Yes, I'm too lazy to look any of that stuff up.

How far in the future?

In about three-four years I think it will look something like this:

C- Sam Watts
G- Tobias Smith if he gets a medical RS and stays healthy
G- Gabe Jackson
T- Damien Robinson
T- Dillion Day

too many variables.

2010 OL: Sherrod, Saulsberry, Brignone, T. Smith, Lawrence
2011 OL: ???, Saulberry, Looney, T. Smith, Lawrence

Who replaces Sherrod is the big concern. Hopefully we sign Robinson, he redshirts, and is ready to take over in 2011. Still tough for a redshirt freshmen.

DL looks really good the next few years. McPhee is our only loss after the 2010 season.

Which is why there is a late push on OLs. I don't know why the push came so late, maybe that's just the way it is with OL talent, but we were late and we missed out on some good ones. This year we will not be too bad, but in 2011 we loose Sherrod. Lawrence will probably come over to LT, but we have to back fill RT, then LT the year after that. It's really important that we at least get some bodies in and get them in the gym this year.

We have a good chance at Damien Robinson, and Steve says we may do a combo deal on Robinson and Eric Lawson (OG). We are after Quinterrius Eaton (South Florida commit), and Dillon Day (grade issues). I think we can expect 4-5 OLs in this class.

Next year is a very good OL class in MS, so expect more same attention. Mullen is also trying to get connections in with some prep schools like UM has done in the past (re: Massie from Hargrave).

Now go subscribe to BDJ and read, you lazy ***.

pretty good next year for a couple of OL. We will need a couple that are ready to play and its hard to get that directly from HS.

I'm not familiar with our history of JUCO linemen, but I've always been under the impression that JUCO offensive linemen typically do not pan out. They may be a quick fix to add depth, but don't expect them to come in and replace a 3 or 4 year starter at tackle --- especially in their first year.

The key to getting contribution from a juco OL transfer is getting them on campus in January. James Carpenter is an example of this.

pretty solid Oline and Dline next year but we need to recruit heavy for the future. If this is true, is there any reason to think we won't be at least 6-6 next year (without huge injury problems).

but the consensus appears to be that it is too early to talk about JUCO players for next year. I see at least 1, if not two JUCO OTs for next year even if we do get Robinson and company. If these guys don't pan out we will be in a world of hurt, and Robinson could go either way.

I am VERY concerned about this class so far. Only one player rated 4 stars or higher. Please, someone, tell me that it will be better than it looks right now.

that really shows how lacking we are in underclassmen for OL. So it appears right now in our SO, FR and current recruiting class we have FIVE bodies to work with so far. And one of those is a converted DL (Hardy) and another is our lone commit so far this year that seemed to be on nobody's recruiting radar but ours.

He's worried about the lack of o-line commits over the last couple of years.

1. J.C. Brignone (converted DT with an offer from Rice) - senior
2. Michael Bufkin (walkon) - senior
3. Phillip Freeman (JC transfer, offers from Oklahoma State and Kansas State) - senior
4. Mark Melichar (No BCS offers) - senior
5. Derek Sherrod (several SEC offers) - senior
6. John McMillian (walkon) - senior
7. Addison Lawrence (No BCS offers) - junior
8. DJ Looney (greyshirt offer at Mike Shula-led Alabama) - junior
9. Quentin Saulsberry (no BCS offers) - junior
10. Gabe Jackson (Auburn, LSU, OM) - sophomore
11. Tobias Smith (SWAC, Sun Belt and USM) - sophomore
12. Sam Latham (walkon) - sophomore
13. Templeton Hardy (converted all-world DT, claimed several offers for DT) - sophomore
14. Sam Watts (no other offers) - RS freshman
15. Blaine Clausell (current commit, USM is best offer) - redshirt?

Other MSU O-line targets:
Of the 18 (TOTAL) offered, two are not committed to anyone. They are:
1. Damien Robinson (Some say he's overhyped and appears out-of-state bound)
2. Darone Bailey - USM is only other offer

So, assuming everything remains the same o-line wise, here's how things will look for 2011.

1. Addison Lawrence (No BCS offers) - senior
2. DJ Looney (greyshirt at Mike Shula Alabama) - senior
3. Quentin Saulsberry (no BCS offerS) - senior
4. Gabe Jackson (Auburn, LSU, OM) - junior
5. Tobias Smith (SWAC, Sun Belt and USM) - junior
6. Sam Latham (walkon) - junior
7. Templeton Hardy (converted all-world DT, claimed several offers for DT) - junior
8. Sam Watts (no other offers) - RS sophomore
9. Blaine Clausell (current commit, USM is best offer) - redshirt freshman?
10. Whatever commits are gotten for next year's class. Better find immediate help.

How did things come to this? This list of those that would still have eligibility next season.
1. Chris Herrera (Iowa State, Baylor, Missouri) - would've been senior this year, RS senior next year, not on roster
2. Aaron Feld - Scholarshipped deep snapper, but at 230 pounds, won't be playing o-line, thus not included above
3. Kyle Love (Akron, Memphis, Tulane) - converted to DL
4. Colton Jenkins - Not on roster
5. Dakota Merritt (NC State) - Not on roster

No expert, but to me 7-5 is what we need to feel good about the season, just because there's a chance we will backslide the next year, especially if we don't get some help in either this class or from JUCO

Who cares about their offers now? Saulsberry is a pretty good guard. Lawrence played well at right tackle. Regardless of their offers, we led the SEC in rushing offense.

But my 2 concerns for next year are inexperience at QB (though it will still likely be an improvement from this year) and what will our defense look like under a new, yet to be named DC. We still get no break in scheduling and I look for the 2010 schedule to be nearly as difficult as last year's.

it misses that fact that we will sign 4-5 guys this year. Everyone is acting like this recruiting class is done, and it's far from it. While the 2008 and 2009 classes really missed on OL recruiting, this happens from time to time and you have to supplement with JUCO guys. This is not the only position this ever happens to, and it's Croom's fault. This staff did miss the boat early this year, but it appears that they have seen the err of their ways and are trying to recover.

There is more going on than what scout.com's list portrays.

For the list of 2011, I think you can add spots 11-13 as redshirt freshmen. Also, screw the offer list. Those guys have performed very well for us under Hevesy.

Which is one of the reasons it worked so well this past year, and should continue to work well assuming you sign agile OL, which I would expect MSU to do. I thought the Lawrence kid would never do anything at MSU, and he has played really well at RT.

But it's not easy to just go & sign guys like that every year. For instance, this year Scout has 17 linemen rated 3-star or better. Last year they had one 4-star tackle (Carpenter) and only 18 linemen rated 3-star or better. Out of those 20 or so guys, some won't be ready to enroll during the spring. So you've only got a handful of quality linemen to choose from who can actually enroll during the spring. A majority of those will not come in ready to take over a starting role in the SEC - especially at tackle. Most JUCO linemen aren't good enough to start immediately. They sit out a year, and will be a solid starter or backup for 2 years. But they rarely come in and take over a starting position.

Look at the guys both State & UM have signed over the last 3-4 years. Quality Starters: JD Hamilton, Corey Actis --- Backups: Freeman, 3 guys at UM (Green, Jean-Louis, Logan Clair) --- signed but DNQ or quit: James Redmond, Aubrey McPhadden.

If we sign 2-3 JUCO linemen next year, we will be lucky if even one can come in and give us quality minutes in 2011. Not saying it can't happen, but if it was as easy it people make it sound, then everyone would be after these guys.
