I looked at the last three games and I thought the best this team could do was 1-2. There is no reason to be all that upset.

Don’t be mad at Clifford. He is average at best. After six years we all know what he gives you. Putting him out there and asking him to produce miracles is just wrong. You have to look at the men who put Clifford in that position, and don’t put the blame on him.

Franklin gives you the same thing almost every year. Losses to ranked teams. 4th quarter collapses. Bowl victories only over teams with names like Memphis. Then he complains about spending more money, just so he can give you the same results. This is the coach who raved after another loss to tOSU that more had to be done for Penn Stste to be elite. That’s true. However it begins with getting rid of him, unless you want nine more years of the same.

So how do you get rid of An overpaid coach with a guaranteed contract? You make life unbearable for him. Ask the hard questions. Put the blame on him and don’t let him do his dance. Then, pray Auburn or someone else hires him away. At least that would be my plan.
Absolutely THIS!! If he’s going to make big time money, he should expect big time scrutiny. He should be reminded of his shortcomings with regularity.

You also said you wouldn't bet on the Minny game because it was essentially a pick'em, and you took OSU and gave the points ... so, perhaps, we should look at your viewpoint in the most realistic light ... comfortably too pessimistic.

4. James can recruit as well as anyone.
This one gets me. We hear what a great recruiter he is in the off-season and anytime someone mentions Franklin needs to go.

Then the games start and suddenly we have a terrible O line, the D line is undersized and not great, the linebackers are awful, there are no real great receivers, we don’t have a trustworthy FG kicker, the punter is not very good, etc, etc.

You can’t have it both ways. Either the recruiting really isn’t very good or there’s a real problem with coaching and/ or development that doesn’t bring out the best in the players.

In accordance with the thread topic, I did a little research earlier tonight and found this:

4th quarter results under Franklin:
--7 times trailing entering the 4th and came back to win
--6 times leading entering the 4th and losing
--3 times tied entering the 4th, going 1-2

That does NOT include the 2018 game against OSU where they were down 14-13 entering the 4th and then took a 26-14 lead with 8 minutes left. It also doesn't include today's situation trailing 16-14 entering the 4th but leading 21-16 with 9:00 left.

I’m disgruntled. There is no good way to lose, but we had a shot today. I was feeling pretty gruntled early in the 4th quarter, and then the wheels fell off. It happened, again, but I won’t pretend to know why. For some reason, the wheels fell off. Lots of MOVING. PARTS o_O when you consider all the coaches and players, on offense and defense, but the bottom line is that the team fell apart late when they had a chance to win. 😞
That's what happens when your quarterback has 4 turnovers. Also, That's what happens when the other team almost 3 times the amount of top 100 players as you the last 5 years. (I counted) Also, you switch coaching staffs and Ohio State still wins. o_O;)

I completely agree with your comments about coach Franklin. He can’t leave soon enough for me. I was there 3 years ago.

I do think you are being too kind in your description of Clifford. He continues to make catastrophic mistakes at the worst possible times. I would bet Clifford has more pick six interceptions and strip sack fumbles returned for touchdowns than any QB in PSU history.

Take a wild guess…who was the architect of these late game collapses?

it ain’t rocket science.

The line had a good game. They weren't completely overmatched save for RT. We had success running the ball, but we ask too much of 2 true freshman. Allen's is the superior RB, but he doesn't have that next gear yet to turn 5s into 12s and 15s into 50s. Singleton is getting better, running tougher, but he lacks the vision to turn Allen's type of runs into homers against the better competition.

Pass blocking was good, minus RT, but it really felt like we had to work hard for everything we got.

I'll be honest, if it's a dry November day when Michigan plays OSU, I could see it being a shoot out. Perhaps advantage Michigan because they dominated us in the trenches and we contained the Buckeyes for 52 minutes and played punch for punch. But, we might be within 7 if we replayed Michigan today. I don't know.
What’s the matter with five yards though? Why does it have to be 12s, 15s, or 50s? 5 is perfect, no need for more than that.

I’m with you. I won’t make believe to know all the in’s and outs. But I do know this. This Ohio State team was not markedly more physically talented than this Penn State team. At a certain point, it comes down to coaching. We were clearly out-coached and it really, really disappoints me. I’m not really sure how else to say it. I think we could have won this this game but we were out-coached by Ohio State. Again.
It was the turnovers and Manny not putting Porter one on one with Harrison. They moved Harrison to the slot away from Porter but we didn’t recognize this??!!! Also our tight ends can’t block a cold.

  • Why not put our All-American in tight man-to-man on Harrison? Way too much cushion overall by our secondary.
  • 4 turnovers is a killer. And we got none.
  • D was playing solid till the 4Q. Then the wheels fell off.
  • Not enough pressure on their QB. I feel like I say this every game.
  • We may have been out 5-star'd by a lot (on paper), but leading 21-16 in the 4Q I really felt like we had a good shot. I don't think the ensuing collapse was because they had more talent.
  • I'm so damn frustrated with losing leads in the 4Q to OSU.

Darnold, Barrett, Luwerke, Stroud....not like a pantheon of Hall of Fame QBs. When will the defense actually show up late in a game?
Under Franklin, it happened once in 9 years.

Maybe during the next comet fly by…
