Remember Polk retiring for a few days in the early 90's right after Sherill was hired???

I worked on the State campus in the early 90's while in school at State. I rode around all day in a truck with this ole country boy who was probably 25 at the time (he was not in school). There were two things I remember him saying, that at the time, I thought were kind of dumb. Many years later, I think he was right. One was that he didn't want to live in a big city, because if someone was gonna kill him, he"d rather see them coming (meaning they couldn"t hide around a corner or in an alley, he was from Ackerman).
But the second one was this... The reason Ron Polk retired (for just a few days) was because Jackie Sherill's hiring was getting all the attention, and Polk didn't like it. My good friend was right on both counts more than likely, but definitely on number 2. Polk has a history of thinking he is larger than the University.
I know this is a random post, but I'm drinking right now, and wanted to get my post count up.

He did announce his retirement to go off and battle the evil-doers of the NCAA...but it only lasted a couple of weeks, I think.

I want to say it was early in the season. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I want to say we were 15-16 games in, undefeated, number 1 in the nation, and he drops that. We played the Mayor's Cup the next game and lost to a terrible Ole Miss team. If my memory is serving me correctly, then you can mark that day as the one where MSU baseball changed for the bad for good.

That sociopath quit on us in 1991 like you said, he quit in 1997, and quit this past season. Any speeches of loyalty are hypocrisy.

If I remember correctly, JSU had a plaque made for Polk when he "retired" and had planned a pre-game ceremony for him when State came into to town to play them. Then of course, Polk withdrew his resignation. Since JSU had already had the plaque, they gave it to him before the game anywa.</p>

"He first announced his retirement during the 1991 season. Polk stated that the NCAA was ruining college baseball with all of the rules they were implementing. New scholarship and roster rules were affecting how many players could be on a team and how many could receive scholarship money to play baseball in college. Polk argued that more players would be tempted to skip college and sign with professional teams out of high school with less scholarship money to be used. Polk took over the role of executive director of the American Baseball Coaches Association in effort to change the rules. However, after much outcry from Bulldog fans, Polk changed his mind mid-season and decided not to retire."

not to say any of that is correct.

we had people begging him to come back after he tried to leave TWICE. We would have been much better off just letting him go.
