If I’m not mistaken, the Sixers got the pick that turned into Barkley in the Jellybean trade. Is that right?

I always say that the rebirth of the Sixers in the 70’s included some colorful personalities that made it extra enjoyable. The funny farm was entrusted to Gene Shue to coach and old Gene had his hands full with Free, Dawkins, and JellyBean.

The Sixers had a promotion that if they scored in excess of x points, everyone got free Jack in the Box. Jellybean got a rebound in the final seconds and called time out. Shue went ballistic and screamed who the hell called time out and that time outs were only called by the coaches. Well Jellybean said that he called TO in case Shue wanted to set up a play so that they could score and the fans could get free Jack in the Box.

If memory is still working, I believe McGinnis was traded for Bobby Jones. Big George might have very well saved the franchise since his coming to Philly lit the match for their rebirth. I went to a fair amount of the 9-73 year games. McGinnis restored some interest. The thought was that George and Doc didn’t play well together and you certainly were not dealing Doc. I always had a soft spot for Big George.

Sadly, the crawl on one of the sports networks just said "Kobe Bryant's Dad". No mention of his NBA career or even his first name.:(

We Owe You One was Dr. J in the promotional video/ad the Sixers ran leading up to the '77-78 season.

It was based on the ending of the '76-'77 season, where the Sixers had posted a 50-32 regular season record, and went up 2-0 on the Trail Blazers in the NBA Final, only to lose the next 4 games.

Unfortunately for the Sixers, the We Owe You One promo didn't work too well, as the '77-'78 team lost in the playoffs to the Washington Bullets -- the team that ended up winning the NBC Championship that year.

McGinnis was traded in the offseason after the loss to the Bullets, for Bobby Jones, who played for Denver at the time.

No

The Sixers traded JellyBean near the start of the '79-'80 season to the San Diego Clippers for the Clippers' 1986 1st round pick. That pick is a somewhat infamous one in Sixers history (or misery), as due to the Clippers' woes that season it became the #1 pick in the draft. the Sixers traded it the day of the 1986 NBA draft to the Cleveland Cavaliers, for Roy Hinson, while the Cavs selected Brad Daugherty.

Sir Charles was already on the Sixers in '86, having been picked by them in the 1984 NBA draft (the 5th pick in the draft). The Sixers had obtained that draft pick by trading World B. Free to the San Diego Clippers near the start of the '78 season, for the Clippers 1984 1st round pick.

Ahhhhhhh……. There we go. That draft day ruined my love for the Sixers. Hinson for Daugherty, Moses and Threatt for Ruland and Cliff Robinson. It wounded me deeply.

Yeah, the results of those trades soured a lot of the fan base on the Sixers.
