This was reported on tonight's broadcast of the Dodgers-Giants game. It must have just happened, because I checked the Web and couldn't find anything. Knew this was coming but still sad news, particularly for a Dodgers fan like me. I grew up listening to him on the radio. He did it, and did it well, for sixty seven (67) years. Truly astounding. I put him behind only Koufax among Dodger legends.

One of the greats. I lived in the L.A. area for a few years growing up and enjoyed Vin Scully on Dodgers broadcasts.

R.I.P.

This one hits a bit harder than others. When you listened to a game he called, especially when it was just him on the broadcast, you felt like it was your buddy calling the game to you over the phone or sitting next to you at the bar describing the play by play. And you hear all of the eulogies that have come out from all of the greats -- Costas, Jon Miller, etc. -- and the same word is used over and over again and that's 'kindness'. The mold was broken when Keith Jackson passed and now it's been busted up again with Vin's passing. I know the Dodgers will honor him the right way at their next home game. I hope MLB finds a way to make it a universal gesture bigger than just a moment of silence at every stadium on Wednesday.

Seemed like a very good and decent man. That said, I never liked his announcing. I know I’m in the minority on that. I always found him boring.

Damn.

We all have our time.

He may be the last of “The Boys of Summer”. If you have not read Roger Kahn’s book, you should. A perfect read when sitting on the deck at the end of the day. When I visit my daughter, who lives in Brooklyn, I pass places and streets mentioned in the book and smile. Scully made us smile too.

He had a great run.

Let perpetual light shine upon him.

The best. I adopted the Dodgers in 1976 when I first felt the autonomy to choose my own team. Shame I can’t bring myself to watch anymore despite playing with passion for 20 years.

Bob Prince (remember him?) once related during a broadcast from Dodger Stadium that all you heard in the stands was Scully's voice on the transistor radios that the fans listened to during the game.

Vin Scully would be on the Mount Rushmore of broadcasters.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Scully

Had me thinking who that would be:

Keith Jackson
Vin Scully
Al Michaels

Seems like a lot of choices for that last spot, and for me personally I may lean Bob Costas. I just always enjoy listening to him (as long as he doesn’t venture into politics, which is my view regardless of party, I just don’t watch sports for that).
