they were terrible. I live in GA and my wife and brother in-law went to GA. They hate Martinez and for good reason. He sucks. The worse thing is that the unit he coaches, DBs are awful. I would draw names out of a hat before I took Martinez. The only reasoning I could live with is if Richt was handcuffing Martinez in any way, but I just doubt that is the case. Georgia did put the defense in bad positions, but there was a lot of talent on the GA defense and Martinez never seemed to produce.
It was worse against the run (4th compared to 55th), and that showed up in affecting the national ranking, but every other aspect of the defense (outside of TFL and sacks) was much improved, from 3rd down defense, Red Zone defense, to scoring defense (which is really the biggest thing that matters anyways).
Any rational person who saw every game of the last two seasons would tell you the 2009 defense was better than the 2008 defense.
Just like any rational person who saw the last two years of State football would tell you that the 2009 team was a much improved product compared to the 2008 team, despite winning only one more game than the 2008 team.

And your stellar defense did that with TWO I-AA teams on your schedule, as well as Memphis, which isn't much better than a I-AA team, and was junior and senior laden.

The difference in the two years was less than 20 yards per game.
The scoring defense (which is all that really matters...points) was much improved in 2009.
But all of you keep going off of a less than 20 yards per game difference in total defense and ignore everything else if it makes you feel better.

We played the toughest schedule in the nation (10 bowl teams), and you on the other hand, played the softest scedule in the SEC. You finished 3 games better then us with 2 I-AA opponents, and we beat your *** like a rented mule. But yet, you come over here to tell us that 24th is better then 19th, that is one hell of an education their providing at OM. Money well spent!
