New challenge?? He hasn't met his current challenge yet. And I write that as someone who is a James Franklin fan.
I anm unclear how these situations work financially. Franklin has a significant buyout right now. Would Florida have to pay that money to Penn State? To Franklin himself? Does Franklin have the option to waive the buyout if he wanted to make a change of scenery?
I understand Penn State would have to pay Franklin if they wanted him to move on, but what happens in the event that it is his choice?

Would probably do well there. Like here. He's not going to get Florida to Georgia, Bama, LSU, Texas levels though.
His 'buyout' should he leave on his own is $2mm in 2024/2025; the massive buyout ($56mm) is what Penn State would pay to him should they fire him. It's the dumbest contract I've seen since my Army enlistment contract. Penn State is TRAPPED and would be foolish to pay that to get rid of him; the whole coaching contract economy needs to be upended; Texas A&M, a public university, paid Jimbo Fisher more than $75mm to fire him.
Not sure if there’s a different way to say this but he’ll definitely have a lot more latitude on the recruiting front in Florida.
What he wouldn't get is a decade to get to a NC game.
I say ride out the 2 years. Not sure how the AD persuaded the BOT to agree to such a contract.
Check out Florida's schedule for 2025 then look at PSU 2025 and tell me why he would consider that?
Thank you for the reply. As I read your post, I started to think about ways that universities could protect themselves from these massive buyouts without being completely unreasonable to the coach. I simply believe that there is just no way to really put this genie back in the bottle however you can work to mitigate the extremes. A very common sense solution would be to build in performance clauses. Just as coaches get bonused based on their performance, the buyout could be reduced basrd on things like win loss record, record, versus rivals, etc., etc.
His buyout for Penn State goes down about $8.5mm per year; so, if Penn State fired Franklin, this is what they would have to pay:
2024 - $56mm
2025 - $47.5mm
2026 - $39mm
2027 - $30.5mm
2028 - $22mm
2029 - $13.5mm
One way to do it is to not sign coaches to 10 year contracts. Franklin has been at Penn State for 11 years and has had 4 contracts, the 10 year extension coming in 2021.

Let me amend my OP and to clarify. What if Franklin were to voluntarily want to leave for a new job like Florida? What would be the contract implications for all three sides, Franklin, PSU, and his new job?

I'm not in the Fire Frankliin Club. I could see him leaving for one of 3 schools, Florida, Florida State or Southern Cal. That being said if they would open, Lane Kiffin will be the Gators first choice. Florida State maybe looks long & hard @ Deion Saunders. Not sure who would be the flavor of the month @ USC. Cignetti should pounce on any big-time offer. Difficult to sustain a transfer-based program (see Mel Tucker, yes he had other issues) and has done what he needed to do against a favorable, so far, schedule.

Incredible how she continued to fail upwards given the disaster class at UCLA and the joke of a contract she gave Franklin. She must've checked some box ... wonder what it was?
