I anm unclear how these situations work financially. Franklin has a significant buyout right now. Would Florida have to pay that money to Penn State? To Franklin himself? Does Franklin have the option to waive the buyout if he wanted to make a change of scenery?
I understand Penn State would have to pay Franklin if they wanted him to move on, but what happens in the event that it is his choice?
Not sure if there’s a different way to say this but he’ll definitely have a lot more latitude on the recruiting front in Florida.
I say ride out the 2 years. Not sure how the AD persuaded the BOT to agree to such a contract. His 'buyout' should he leave on his own is $2mm in 2024/2025; the massive buyout ($56mm) is what Penn State would pay to him should they fire him. It's the dumbest contract I've seen since my Army enlistment contract. Penn State is TRAPPED and would be foolish to pay that to get rid of him; the whole coaching contract economy needs to be upended; Texas A&M, a public university, paid Jimbo Fisher more than $75mm to fire him.
Check out Florida's schedule for 2025 then look at PSU 2025 and tell me why he would consider that? They have the dollars. Franklin might be ready for a new challenge.
Thank you for the reply. As I read your post, I started to think about ways that universities could protect themselves from these massive buyouts without being completely unreasonable to the coach. I simply believe that there is just no way to really put this genie back in the bottle however you can work to mitigate the extremes. A very common sense solution would be to build in performance clauses. Just as coaches get bonused based on their performance, the buyout could be reduced basrd on things like win loss record, record, versus rivals, etc., etc.His 'buyout' should he leave on his own is $2mm in 2024/2025; the massive buyout ($56mm) is what Penn State would pay to him should they fire him. Looks like 8-4 to meWould probably do well there. Like here. He's not going to get Florida to Georgia, Bama, LSU, Texas levels though.
Who cares. The days of us sweating over whether Franklin stays or leaves are long over. They have the dollars. Franklin might be ready for a new challenge.
Ask 1 how much he loves a new OC every year. GMs MUST hire OCs as HC imoThis was bantered about earlier this season. It's nothing new. The only difference is, since PSU lost to OSU, more fans pay attention to this kind of talk.
I heard the Saints fired their head coach. Franklin to Bourbon Street ?
Greetings Jimmy Sexton!! It's been a couple of years since we heard from you, but your re-appearance isn't unexpected. Stop by my tailgate on Saturday and we'll have a couple of cold ones. They have the dollars. Franklin might be ready for a new challenge.

Who is the source of this rumor? Some nerd sitting at a computer on a slow sports day or anyone with any genuine info? They have the dollars. Franklin might be ready for a new challenge.
My wife and I had a blast there after the 1982 Natty against Georgia. Sure why not? This was bantered about earlier this season. It's nothing new. The only difference is, since PSU lost to OSU, more fans pay attention to this kind of talk.

Let me amend my OP and to clarify. What if Franklin were to voluntarily want to leave for a new job like Florida? What would be the contract implications for all three sides, Franklin, PSU, and his new job?

Probably during one of the BOT's double secret Executive sessions.I say ride out the 2 years. Not sure how the AD persuaded the BOT to agree to such a contract.
Well, notuf-Franklin contract clause:
“You may not call plays at any time during a game. You may not wear a headset at any time during a game.”
Well, not necessary as he doesn't call plays at all during a game.uf-Franklin contract clause:

TPG.One way to do it is to not sign coaches to 10 year contracts. Franklin has been at Penn State for 11 years and has had 4 contracts, the 10 year extension coming in 2019.
2027-28 is when things get interesting. Until then, enjoy the ride. His buyout for Penn State goes down about $8.5mm per year; so, if Penn State fired Franklin, this is what they would have to pay:
2024 - $56mm
2025 - $47.5mm
2026 - $39mm
2027 - $30.5mm
2028 - $22mm
2029 - $13.5mm
If he’s still here he and his agent will be looking for an extension as soon as a year from now. Can’t recruit if he’s not2027-28 is when things get interesting. Until then, enjoy the ride.
No Matt Rhule on that list.SI has a funny article about the 'College Football Coach Escape Plan' - in their scenario, everyone wins (or so they say):
- Florida fires Napier, hires Franklin.
- Penn State buys out and hires Cignetti.
- Indiana hires Mark Stoops.
- Kentucky hires Jamey Chadwell.
- Liberty hires Dabo Swinney (God's work).
- Clemson hires Todd Monken (Baltimore Ravens OC) and bring on Brett Venables as DC.
- Oklahoma hires Rhett Lashlee.
- SMU hires Lincoln Riley.
- USC hires Kalen DeBoer.
- Alabama hires DeMeco Ryans.
I'm not in the Fire Frankliin Club. I could see him leaving for one of 3 schools, Florida, Florida State or Southern Cal. That being said if they would open, Lane Kiffin will be the Gators first choice. Florida State maybe looks long & hard @ Deion Saunders. Not sure who would be the flavor of the month @ USC. Cignetti should pounce on any big-time offer. Difficult to sustain a transfer-based program (see Mel Tucker, yes he had other issues) and has done what he needed to do against a favorable, so far, schedule. They have the dollars. Franklin might be ready for a new challenge.
Sandy on her way out after letting Franklin and his agent con Penn State into a 10 year extension while he was 7-4 (finished 7-6) in 2021:
