If players are going to be paid, every player needs to be paid the same, walk on and star, and it needs to be a reasonable amount.

If you are a star, you get more tail and you make the big bucks in the draft.

What we have currently is insanity.

If you follow it closely, lsu baseball is making TA&M football from last year look fairly ho-hum. Straight free agency in the portal and stories of them telling recruits that they will match draft money, including first rounders. I’m not sure how accurate that is, but I’ve seen it said.

That would undoubtedly be ruled an anti-trust violation.

Its going to take a while, but this stuff will be reined in.

Our best hope right now is the NLRB successfully gets the Pac 12 players ruled as employees, then the players unionize, and then the players and their representatives recognize some structure to all of this is best for fan interest and their own bottom line.

Message: "we don't pay high school recruits" 🤥🤡

you have to wonder what the private bama funded deals are with 5 stars and 4 stars vs. the public NIL deals are

"I think a couple of things are of concern," Saban said in August. "We allow alumni through collectives to get involved in recruiting and other things. That’s always something we’ve always guarded against in college football.

The simple answer is to get the collectives out of it & let the schools contract with the players directly. If you’re under contract, transfers must be negotiated. If you’re out of contract, you’re a free agent.

Schools paying players is not in the best interests for fans. Tax dollars shouldn’t be paying entertainers. If student athletes go on the school payroll, many will walk away out of spite. I definitely don’t want my taxes paying athletes no matter how large or small the percentage of their actual scholarship is funded by taxes.

I can't think of a legal way to get this schit under control without making the athletes W-2'd employees and creating salary caps. And yes, "Under Contract" where transfers are not the sole decisions of players.

Unless I'm mistaken, the only tax dollars involved are those used on the education side of the coin. All other NIL $ would still be from the private sector fan base.

Not if they become unionized and employees of the school.

Wish they’d just increase stipends and ban collectives. I just don’t see where you draw that line. The players need to actually have to work to earn the money.

The 30 for 30 about this era is going to be great in 2050.

the argument for them needing a “living wage” is bullsjet.

they don’t “need” more stipend money. The argument is they should be able to profit on NIL. Increasing a stipend doesn’t change that.

This mentions the lineman wanted his girlfriend accepted into law school and for it to be paid for in addition to his half a million. It looks like he's headed to Miami now, which has a law school. Is this a potential violation if they did in fact take him up on the girlfriend getting accepted into law school and paying for it just to get a player to come to school there? This is getting ridiculous. And I'm sure this isn't the first situation like this. It's gotta be a violation though if players are getting non athletes benefits through NIL.

The huge money being generated and paid to coaches and staffers says otherwise.

They deserve some money from the school, preferably from the TV side. And some deserve a little NIL. But not from collectives. That needs to go back to the black market.

You have players fleecing these collectives and holding boosters hostage. That has to stop, at least legally.

I don’t think you understand what “need” means

the money paid to coaches and staff is based on supply and demand

that’s what NIL was supposed to be and is sort of.

There's no limits to capitalism. Unless you get a monopoly.
Saban is about to become the vestigial organ of college football. Old man syndrome..
I'm doubting they win in the new NIL above the table era. They had an advantage until now

In the old days, Saban could give them a brand new car or Dodge truck for a 5-star OL. Now they want $800,000. I don't blame him for telling them that. Anyone can see they could start with a smaller amount until they prove they are that valuable. It's stupid.

I'm guessing they have well established tiers/packages of what 5 stars and 4 stars get.

That's over.

You interjected that word, not me. As typical you are making **** up and creating arguments when there are none.

But to be clear, you are FOR donor-based payments to players, rather than the school-based payments?

What I find funny is the players still aren't really getting a slice of the pie. They get nice facilities, stipend, some for jersey sales and the standard school/life/academic costs from school. This nil money isn't coming from the pie.

I’m damn sure not for tax dollars going to football players anymore than it already is.

And if we are going to pay players it should be on performance demand just like the rest of our society.

How that happens? Lots of ways to skin a cat and there is no right way the first time. It will have to evolve.

But there is no justifiable reason or need to increase “stipends” as you mentioned.

And I didn’t make anything up. I responded to a post and tried to be clear and concise.

It’s TV money. Not taxes. It would be tied to revenues. It would eliminate the basic fleecing of collectives.

Collectives need to be banned either way. At minimum there needs to be some guidelines on the work being done.

ETA: I’m not against a booster wanting to give a player some money if they want. Let them pay a gift tax or whatever. But we need to get rid of this collective side of it. That’s not NIL.

Does the current setup suck?
Sure but how do you stop that based on the law as it is written?

A higher stipend to all players does nothing to change why the law was written.

I think you might have missed the context of my message.

Yeah to be honest I’m not sure what most peoples point is in this thread so I guess I’m saying it generally to anyone that thinks making them employees is going to solve anything as far as NIL goes.

I've no problem with them wanting to be able to monetize their name, image, and likeness. Like how that LSU gymnast can make money off her Instagram account. It's not like she would lose that money if she transferred to Auburn, etc.

Could you imagine if the NFL allowed players to accept endorsement deals contingent on playing for a specific team? It would be ludicrous and teams would use every means possible to use it to pay over the cap.

What Saban said, was if you are not all world, (and a QB), You are expendable/ interchangeable. Without saying it.
Dime a dozen to us. Some players, overvalue themselves, I guess.

True NIL deals would not likely be affected, but this idea of collectives and straight pay for play could be resolved via collective bargaining. The players have already been paid by the schools for years (scholarships, room and board, stipends) so the only real change would be amounts.

I have no problem with true endorsement deals for players. If they can make money doing a few commercials or whatever, good for them. Its just too bad that some markets provide more opportunities.

However, I do think the players could agree to rules regarding endorsement deals through collective bargaining.. I'm not sure why they would, but as long as the schools are not forcing restrictions on them, I think they could avoid anti-trust rules

So is players asking for their girlfriends to get accepted into law school and getting it paid for by the collective ok if a school actually follows through with it?

If an NFL player is doing commercials for a local car dealer, don't you think the deal has contingencies for the player leaving the team?

The only way that I see to stop this without legal changes is for said rich boosters to keep their money in their pocket, and that’s not going to happen. Apparently it is worth a small fortune to be able to go to a cocktail party and brag about giving x amount of money to some player or recruit. I just do t get it. There are lots of worthwhile organizations out there that could put that money to good use. I guess it’s not cool to brag about giving a bunch of money to something like St. Jude’s. There are some serious misguided values in our world these days.

Yeah I'm kinda curious how anyone can claim we're in a recession when these guys are ready and willing to fund this crap.

Local car dealer = $50K or car

NIL = 10 to 100 times more
