I'd never even heard of the guy until I saw folks posting on social media about his new music video. I've never seen and never will see any of his videos/performances, but the dumb thing is these people think they are being edgy or provocative. Nothing is edgy or provocative anymore. Our society has seen it all. Some performer had a video last year in which he was giving Satan a lap dance. Our culture has been desensitized to to anything that would be considered shocking. It's been a good 30 years, or close to it, since there was anything edgy in music. Their only avenue, since they can't actually produce good music, is to become increasingly vulgar. Nobody's listening to this guy's music because it's good music. There is no envelope to push anymore. I saw a snippet of an interview with him recently and he was talking about himself as though he was breaking barriers. I'm sorry to tell him, but it's all been done. There's nothing original you can do anymore. You can only take what's previously been done and do it in a more vulgar manner. You simply cannot shock people anymore.

Standup comedy is going down the same path and has been for a while. When the focus of your punchline is an f-bomb, then it's not a funny joke.

I like to think (hope) it has a lot more to do with being edgy and provocative, like you said. Or trying to be.

Nate Bargatze is the best out there as a comedian and never uses foul language. Highly suggest his Netflix specials.

Yep, he's a funny guy. It's real comedy. Without all the profanity and vulgarity, you actually have to bring out the humor in things. If you're doing is telling a dirtier joke than the previous guy, that's not comedy.

I stopped watching the Grammys when they stopped having real rock bands and it turned into a choreography contest. Awards shows are really just that industry giving itself awards anyway.

musically I really don’t care for the song

Strip away all the absurd provocateur satanic costumes and dancing away and what is the song about?

It’s actually an indictment of infidelity. The unholy act is the man cheating on his innocent unsuspecting wife.

The female “Satan” is taunting the husband that if his wife ever knew what a POS he really was she would kick him to the curb. She then says just pay me baby and i’ll keep your nasty secrets.

It’s a visual performance designed to offend with a lyrical message about the evil and hypocrisy of a man cheating on his good wife.

And yes it is pointed directly at heterosexual white males

But it doesn't really offend. It's just white noise. Aside from being over-the-top vulgar (I assume. I haven't seen it.), he's not staking out any new artistic territory. He's just doing the same thing that's been done a million times, only in a more vulgar way.

There's nothing interesting or artistic about it. And that goes for the vast majority of his peers. Anything they do will be forgotten in a month.

My kids were singing hickory dickory dock the other day. That song is nearly 280 years old. Hickory Dickory Dock has infinitely more staying power than any song being produced today.

Gosh, y'all sound like my parents when I was listening to Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and later KISS and Pantera.....and probably quite a few others also.

Those groups actually did push the envelope. However one felt about those groups you mention, they made you go "yikes." Sam Smith makes you go "yawn."

The biggest annoyance I have with artists like this Sam Smith guy is that he's living under a delusion that he's edgy. That he's pushing the envelope and breaking barriers. Like I said above, another artist had a video last year in which he was giving Satan a lap dance. Sam Smith is making the safest music in the world.

Never really listened to his music, but there are a lot of singers/groups that become popular that have little to no actual talent....Vanilla Ice and Billy Ray Cyrus come to mind....more fluff than substance.

That strikes me as odd. I almost hate to ask, but are hetero white males supposed to be the only people that cheat?
Uh NO! But remember it is a trans person singing the song with Sam Smith AND ….. how shall we say, a certain portion of society(white males)) clearly tells us how evil trans people are without addressing the dysfunction of their own. The song is deriding the perfect on the outside male who is a POS behind closed doors…. Like say maybe Jerry Falwell Jr

I agree with pretty much everything you say, my point is the OP labeled the song demonic as a visual response not understanding the lyrics.

it’s sorta like my parents getting upset with “Paradise by the dashboard light” they thought it glorified wanton sexuality when in actuality”I always keep my promise, I never break a vow, but God only knows what I could do right now”

Ah, ok. "Marginilized" group singing about how white men are evil.

Dress up like the devil and insult a large demographic and like magic, people are talking about you for a day or two.

Oh well, someone will top this at the next show. Can't wait.

Not so much evil as hypocrites. And personally I think it is about power more than anything. Jerry Falwell Jr is such a perfect example, He condemned drinking and any kind of sexual immorality and behind closed doors he was drinking and flying a large A$$ freak flag

Substitute "evil" for "hypocrites", and it doesn't really change anything. I've officially given too much thought at this point to a sterotypical "look at me" moment.

Is she? I will defer to your opinion on that. I am no expert on either of them.

I have tormented my children with the achey breaky heart video, and never with any of hers.
I listened because my daughters grew up with Hanna Montana and continued to listen to her. She's not great, but not bad either. She has some variety and is a bit edgy at times.

I hate "Achy, Breaky Heart"!! Can never get that damned song out of my head when i hear it....almost have to play something equally as bad and catchy.

Not only white males. Plenty of black, hispanic, asian, middle eastern etc. males are telling us how evil trans people are as well.
Why choose a satanic visual as opposed to a Godly visual to deliver this lyrical message?

You really have too much time on your hands. I really don’t dive that deep into what the lyrics mean in pop songs.

But I’m also the guy that the last book he read was “Curious George Makes Pizza” so what do I know.

I had a great high school English teacher in the 70’s who taught us Shakespeare and all the classics. Occasionally he would present us rock songs and tell us we needed to study the lyrics as if they were poetry.

One class he did Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
We thought we were so cool until he explained that it was a song about tripping on
L ucy
S ky
D iamonds

we all went Wait, HUH??…..OMG!! How did I not get that.(we were 14-15) Ever since then I always read lyrics to songs I like, so I don’t end up "blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche in the middle of the night"

I’m going to go out on a limb and say you are 40+. There are several studies that show we loose touch with music after a certain age.

Just because you don’t like the current music doesn’t mean it’s not popular. You don’t win a Grammy or become a platinum selling artist without being popular.

Sam smith is probable one of the top 10 pop artist right now. It was a performance. I just fail to see the big deal. So what he dressed up and had red lights for a song that is basically talking about infidelity. Which is demonic in nature considering it’s one of the Ten Commandments
