With Hulu, I don't even watch live TV anymore unless it is football.
Ditto.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say you are 40+. There are several studies that show we loose touch with music after a certain age.

Just because you don’t like the current music doesn’t mean it’s not popular. You don’t win a Grammy or become a platinum selling artist without being popular.

Sam smith is probable one of the top 10 pop artist right now. It was a performance. I just fail to see the big deal. So what he dressed up and had red lights for a song that is basically talking about infidelity. Which is demonic in nature considering it’s one of the Ten Commandments
I agree it was no big deal. There was nothing original about it.

I had a great high school English teacher in the 70’s who taught us Shakespeare and all the classics. Occasionally he would present us rock songs and tell us we needed to study the lyrics as if they were poetry.

One class he did Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
We thought we were so cool until he explained that it was a song about tripping on
L ucy
S ky
D iamonds

we all went Wait, HUH??…..OMG!! How did I not get that.(we were 14-15) Ever since then I always read lyrics to songs I like, so I don’t end up "blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche in the middle of the night"
And, see, here’s the thing. Back then they were actually pushing the envelope. They had to be way more creative and original to put subversive stuff in music. And you got some iconic songs. Now there’s no restriction. You can do/say anything you want, so people are just being over the top vulgar.

In your opinion, but obviously the masses do not agree. Seeing as how they are selling a ton of records.

No wonder our society is in trouble when that kind of stuff is celebrated on national TV. I can’t watch the Grammys anymore stopped a few years ago couldn’t take the politics. Now I can’t take the general crap although there was some good
stuff - Mick Fleetwood, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder. Sam Smith and all that was disgusting.
Looking forward to Journey/Toto concert Friday night!

If I watch any celebrity award show its because I'm held hostage with my eyelids taped open.
I have few brain cells left I don't need to waste it on that garbage.

You do realize it’s 2023 and rock is dead right.

So, your opinion is that if something sells well, it must be good?
Correct if an album makes platinum it’s a good album. Maybe not to you because you don’t like it or are stuck in a genre of old. Music evolves. We know humans don’t evolve with it for the most part. Most of us get stuck in a particular genre and when it evolves we get left behind.

Young adults and teenagers love this music. I’m neither and I think unholy is not a bad song. Again just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean the masses agree.

Gosh, y'all sound like my parents when I was listening to Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and later KISS and Pantera.....and probably quite a few others also.
My parents used to complain about the likes of the Stones, The Who, Santana, etc.
Then when they saw some of the costumes Elton John would wear they lost their collective mind.
It's all relative, I don't listen to much of the newer music, but I'm not going to exude much effort to get worked up about it.

By your logic, Golden Corral is good food.

I'd never even heard of the guy until I saw folks posting on social media about his new music video. I've never seen and never will see any of his videos/performances, but the dumb thing is these people think they are being edgy or provocative. Nothing is edgy or provocative anymore. Our society has seen it all. Some performer had a video last year in which he was giving Satan a lap dance. Our culture has been desensitized to to anything that would be considered shocking. It's been a good 30 years, or close to it, since there was anything edgy in music. Their only avenue, since they can't actually produce good music, is to become increasingly vulgar. Nobody's listening to this guy's music because it's good music. There is no envelope to push anymore. I saw a snippet of an interview with him recently and he was talking about himself as though he was breaking barriers. I'm sorry to tell him, but it's all been done. There's nothing original you can do anymore. You can only take what's previously been done and do it in a more vulgar manner. You simply cannot shock people anymore.

Standup comedy is going down the same path and has been for a while. When the focus of your punchline is an f-bomb, then it's not a funny joke.
And, Harry Styles' outfit was horrendous. I don't know if he was trying to imitate Elton John, Liberace' or Lady GaGa.

Well, creativity is dead, that's for sure. I guess everyone has just run out of ideas. That's why they're remaking "White Men Can't Jump"

Creativity today is "Ooooh, let's do Ghostbusters, but with women instead of men!"

Popular music is just a vomitous regurgitation of stuff that's already been done.

How do you argue with a song that is highly popular is not good? Basically what you’re saying is you don’t think it’s good but it means nothing. In order for a song to reach #1 and win awards, as well as be performed at one of the major awards shows, it’s considered good by a lot of people. Therefore it’s good. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean in the grand scheme of things the song is not good. It’s just not good to you, which is perfectly fine. But you can’t call the Song trash and that be true.

The use of gas isn't a bad idea. Think of it as a bang that you paid for.

I think that because something is popular doesn't necessitate that it's good quality.

But then we're splitting hairs on the definition of "good" to continue arguing. So you guys carry on.

Same.....times and tastes change. I'm just glad my youngest daughter still knows all the lyrics to "American Pie" which I use to play on guitar all the time.
