Edited to add that our great fans (and our fans are great) didn't do jack **** to help us beat North Carolina in the 2003 regional.

if our legendary coach didn't start Maholm against Middle Tennessee State or whoever. That one was on Polk big time.</p>

I had been against re-hiring Polk to begin with, but figured I'd give him a chance. And during that season, things were looking pretty good. But when he started Maholm against MTSU I was pissed. Of course, I knew all along that he would do that. Then when we lost to UNC the next day and again the following day, I knew I'd probably never watch him coach another game at MSU again. And I didn't. Although I would have for the super-regional except I had to work Friday and then didn't want to drive all the way to Starkville just to get sent over to the Hump to watch it on TV.

I'm still pissed as hell about that decision even after 5 years.

due to the varying amounts of each scholarship.

I know of a few that wanted to go to Ole Miss and a few that preferred to go to MSU that went to the 'other' school due to more scholarship money.

Not necessarily the actual money, but due to the appearance that the school wanted him more than the other.

It's also why many of the blacks (often discussed here) go the JUCO (or minors) route over the D1 route......a full ride.

.....and before this turns into a Gene's Page type Lucky Day scholarship thread....we have very few, (if any) contributors on the baseball team that get Lucky Day money-----regardless of what is said over there.

"<span class="post-title">The Miami SR was the only one OM lost that they should have won...........</span>Even though the SR took place in Oxford and OM won game 1, you just had a sense that Texas wasn't going away."

Wow. I don't think you would ever see this written about State losing a super it was hosting and leading the series 1-0. I don't care if MSU was playing the freakin' Yankees in a super in Starkville.

much in the Lucky Day "excuse" for why Ole Miss has generally outperformed MSU in baseball over the last 5 years. It works as a great crutch though for guys like KB21 to explain away any and all failures from Polk's progam though.

The whole series was really competitive. Texas closer blew the save in game one and Ole Miss squeaked it out. Texas slid by in game two. Game 3 came down to the Texas closer versus Stephen Head in the 9th and he got Head to strike out. That series was a toss up even after Ole Miss won game 1. Both teams were pretty evenly matched, but Texas had lost the championship the year before and just seemed to have an edge from that over every team they played in the postseason that year. Again, you can make a comparison to last year's Oregon State team. Some have categorized losing that SR to Texas as choking but I disagree. Miami the following year was choking.

We've lost more than our share (see 84, 87, 88, 89, 92, 03).

And I thought after ole miss had gone up 1-0 and had 2 games at home to win one to go on to the CWS, they had it in the bag. And if it had been MSU, our fans would have thought the same thing. And if we would have gone on to lose the next 2 in a row at home and blew our shot at the CWS, I don't think there would be many saying we didn't choke. Well, maybe KB21.

"And I thought after ole miss had gone up 1-0 and had 2 games at home to win one to go on to the CWS, they had it in the bag."

And that's where you went wrong. In a 3 game series, in baseball, anything can happen. How many times in college have we seen a team win game one of a weekend series and lose the other two games? In baseball in general I can remember some very improbable playoff comebacks. BoSox down 3-0 to the Yanks and come back to win the series. Braves down 3-1 to the Cards and come back to win the series, blowing out the Cards in the final 3 games. Twins down 3-2 in the WS to the Braves and winning the last two games. Yanks down 2-0 to the Braves in '96 and winning the final four games, including 3 at Atlanta. In baseball anything can happen. Oregon State played in a bunch of elimination games during their first NC run two years ago. In the championship series they lost the first game and won the final two.

True. OSU lost the first game of the CWS rounds as well and had to win 4 straight just to get to the title game in 2006. So they were actually 6-0 in elimination games during the CWS if you include the 2 title series wins.

There is as much chance of us hiring Bianco, as there is of dawgstudent stepping down and letting you run this board....

..."that's baseball".

And for the record, I don't really disagree with you on this. I just don't think the folks here would give msu a break for losing that series like ole miss did.

At the time, we were just happy to be in that position.

Now the stakes have increased, therefore it's no longer acceptable.
