Promotion is not the job of the SID, that would be marketing's responsibility.
The only complaint anyone can have in Media Relations over the years would be the website being horrendous for so many years and slow to be updated. Again, not media relations fault, they submit the stories and info and wait.
SIDs are not supposed to be noticed and receive awards, the only publication awards in the field are the CoSIDA awards, which David usually one of the top in the Basketball Media Guides for his area.
No david is not irreplaceable, he will be replaced..and it shall be interesting to see the route Greg goes for the hire of the hottest sport on campus.
I can say that the SID dept has always been understaffed, and LT refused to hire anyone else, and now with david out, and i know another SID leaving on their own accord..the dept is extremly thin.

As Scooba said, if you're complaining about promotion, then blame marketing, not media relations. Marketing puts out the posters and schedule cards and advertisements trying to get you to buy tickets, etc.

Has men's basketball garnered some national attention, had some national stories written? Have they had players get national honors? That's something that you attribute solely to the athlete/team, but the media contact does plenty behind the scenes to help that happen.

Information has gotten up on the web quicker now that the school posts its own releases instead of having a webmaster off at the publisher's site post it when it comes through email.

If you don't notice the media relations people, that's usually best. That means they are doing a great job.

Those job descriptions both specifically reference media guides, game programs and notes, not posters, schedule cards, ect. Again, the latter are marketing items, things made for fans. And with the game programs, usually the media contact is responsible for information like rosters, lineups and feature stories, not the advertising or, in most cases, design. Those are done by outside companies like TCFNA Host or ISP/Learfield. Thanks for proving my point.

David Rosinski was outstanding - and will be big big big time missed

That being said, things are changing at MSU

Marketing and promotion is fixing to fall under the Media Relations umbrella under the new regime --- however, that has not been the case in the past

Im all in favor of any revamp of marketing, the turnover in that position over the recent years has been part of the problem and sever holding of the hands, and limiting all marketing responsibilities to a single person compared to ever other school in the nation having a staff of 2 at least or more to do the same.
Signing this national contract will be HUGE, finally things are flowing in the right direction.

working with the media is the most effective and cost efficient way to promote and market your company or in this case school. its what I do in a different sports related field

and to clarify something - i do not have a problem with david. i have bowled against him and coached baseball against his son. he is a good guy. but i do think out athletic dept has been lack in all areas of marketing including utilizing the press as well as needed.

Look at it this way. The firing of Rosinski may not have been related to job performance (and some of the other firings may not have either). You have to think this may just be the first step in a complete reorganization of the Athletic Department. I've worked in companies before where people were let go simply because the new management wanted to combine responsibilities of two jobs under one person while moving people around to newly created divisions, eliminating others, etc - and creating a new org chart that looked nothing like the old one.

Having said that, I hate to see anyone let go who was doing their job well. This looks like just a first step to a new organizational scheme.
