Depends on how you carry yourself. I lived in Belhaven neighborhood in 2017 and stopped there daily/weekly for gas or snacks whenever I needed anything. No one ever messed with me and I’m the whitest white dude ever and was driving a BMW at the time.

I was at this one station that had long high stacks of cans in front of it. And this wacko just started shooting at them. I tried running and hiding, but I could barely escape the bullets because there were so many cans. I mean, he really hated those cans.
I thought they were just defective?

Yeah, if that gas station shakes you up, then no wonder society is so afraid of cities.

I went back and looked on my Amex. Kroger does 150, Walmart (Murphy USA) does 200, another does just 100. It varies with each gas station.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about. This has never happened to me (I don't think).

Why the 17 would a gas station put a phantom $200 charge on my credit card and then credit back the $200 minus the cost of my gas? Why not just charge me the correct amount for the gas?

Is this an AmEx thing? Or, is this a Mississippi thing?

It’s a hold on your card. I thought this was common knowledge.

My questions are not necessarily directed to you DCD, but to anyone that may have some insight.

Why is a "hold" necessary? What is the purpose of the gas station putting the "hold" charge on your credit card? Why not just charge the price of the gas, so there's no need to credit anything back to the card.

It seems the gas station is creating extra work for itself.

It’s to make sure you have the money to cover the gas purchase. It’s BS but they’re allowed to do it.

I just got power back on a few hours ago. It went out Saturday night around 7:30. I did see that they did put one of the two $200 drafts or whatever they are called on my card, but not the second one. So just for the record it took four days to take one of the two charges off of my card.

That's some crazy shlt I've never heard of before. I don't think gas stations in Northern Virginia do that.

Learn something new every day, I reckon.

Thank you 100% !!! my mom was in and out of Baptist and the nursing home for the last 3 years of her life and my dad was in the Baptist the last four months of his life back in 2021. the thought of not going over there to not visit never EVER crossed my mind.. if I need gas I need fu--ing gas, so all these old timers worried about where i am from need not worry about that.
I pay at the pump, keep the car running, keep my right hand in my right jacket pocket so nobody knows if i have or have not. never had a problem with the natives. just got fu--ed by amex and Shell.
