It’s not like gift cards have to be wrapped.

You know, I have this argument with my wife every Christmas. I tell her to get me a gift card to bass pro. Come hunting season I know I’ll need things for the upcoming season but I just don’t know what I’ll need. Allows me to take the gifts of Christmas and put them where I need them the most (august). She complains they’re impersonal. I say “but that’s what I’m asking for, and what I can use the most”. Round and round we go.

It's your wife. You share the same bank accounts. Giving you a gift card is simply giving you nothing, since you already had that cash. When you're in that position of having the same pool of money, it's correct that giving of a gift is really all about the sentiment ... getting them something they otherwise wouldn't have gotten themselves, or getting them something that evokes emotion.

Yeah - getting Blanton’s isn’t so ‘simple’ either…

sorry, I should have been drinking something else. Point being, bourbon.

here in NC, in my county specifically, they have an email distro that they send out anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 hours before they do an allocated drop. Not only that, but they have some seriously rural ABC stores that have a supply in the back that if you build a relationship with the clerk they'll hook you up with. A buddy has been seriously hunting allocated bourbon for a while now, and has bottles, plural, of blantons. he gave me one for watching his kid last minute when his wife had to be induced. i got a bottle of Smokewagon for a buddy that also has bottles, plural (from doing the rural liquor store stops between NC and the eastern shore of MD/Ohio), of blantons so he gave me one of his bottles in exchange. Blantons isn't as hard to find as some make it out to be broadly speaking. Just depends on what you want to pay for it

here's what we get during bourbon season.

Our county board requested that the state send them the un-used allocated bottles for distribution. Apparently there are counties that don't like to deal with the pain of doing the allocated thing. I wonder if Mecklenberg is that way

Buffalo Trace is the one that’s tough to get here in Chapel Hill.

funny how that works. Down here in Fayetteville it's pretty much all the allocated stuff that's hard to get. If you're willing to be at the ABCs about an hour before they open on delivery days, you can get most of it, but you gotta camp out.

Gift bags.

End of story.
This has been my answer for many years now. Wrapping is nutso imo. I 'humbug' all the way if I have to wrap even one gift, which I usually do for wifey or for a my-side great nephew or niece. (Wifey happily does Daughter's gifts). But one of my first steps each Christmas season is to load up on gift bags of different sizes.
Run low on the right size, and suddenly have only a small bag for something that is better suited for a medium bag? Clear packing tape is my friend. Keeps those seams and tears together for a few more days!

You need to make the gift card seem like the best option by giving her several options. Honey, I would a BJ, a Porsche, and a gift card to Bass Pro Shops.

I remember when I used to just be able to walk into Kroger and pick up a bottle of Blantons. Feels like a lifetime ago.

No kidding. I have a good relationship with the owner of two local liquor stores. I get plenty of hard to get wines from him, and he has a great selection of hard liquors, too. He keeps telling me that he gets Blanton's deliveries only sporadically, and to keep coming back and checking. I have done this 4-5 times over the last few months, all to no avail.

Because I am not a bourbon drinker, I'm also not clear on what a reasonable market price is for a 750 ml bottle of Blanton's. My wife, who wants to get one for a business colleague who did her a big favor, says that she believes a 750 ml bottle should go for around $65 to $75 but, checking on the Internet, it seems like online sellers are hawking it at a much higher price - like $150+. I'm guessing that this is simply indicative of a serious supply vs. demand imbalance, and that I will have a long wait if I want to pay under $100 a bottle. Any information would be appreciated.

Did you misspell burger, or burglar?

Here's the photo of the scary house burglar PSUJam is guarding against (per his link) ...

or maybe PSUJam just wants that guy to be his house meat ...

Retail is right around 56$ a bottle. Secondary can get north of 200$. Just depends on what you’re comfortable with.

Does your buddy get regular deliveries in? That’s what people do down here. ESPECIALLY during bourbon season (sept-Dec). Deliveries come every other Tuesday. People line up anywhere from 30-60 minutes early to see what they get in. Granted like i said we get emails when they’re gonna drop allocated stuff, but the county I hunt in has an ABC that doesn’t do emails, and they have people line up every other Friday. The bourbon hunting game is such that if someone finds a bottle of something allocated and they know the game they’re calling buddies to come and the store is sold out quick.

If they’re not regular on delivery schedule, you could ask him when they get a delivery in to give you a call. I find they’re not shy about when they get deliveries, but they don’t tell you what they have coming in. Fair play and whatnot.
