I am going through the old SNLs and I am at 1980 right now. The unfunniest thing ever, but it's cool seeing Eddie Murphy in the early stages of his career.

Unpopular opinion: The original SNL cast is the least funny line up. Not one funny cast member I can think of. The current line up is pretty good, and Keenan Thompson is one of the best to ever do it. People including me always seem to say SNL just isn’t as good as it was in X time which usually is their young adulthood(early 90s if you’re me). Any comedy based on current events and pop culture is not going to seem quite so funny 30, 40, 50 years later or to the olds of the present time.

This thread is like a meeting of the "What is Humor?" emotional support group.

But yeah, the current lineup is pretty weak with a few exceptions. It's definitely been worse.

Last night seemed like on of those episodes where Lorne just placed a briefcase full of drugs on the writer's table and told them to make a fun show. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I laughed several times last night and fell asleep after Weekend Update. The first Elton & Brandi Carlisle song was a fun bop, haven't seen the second one. I've never found Jack Black all that interesting or funny; I think tenacious D is my favorite thing he's done.

It's weird to me how binary so many people have gotten about tv/movies/culture. If something isn't 10/10 BREATHTAKING, that means it SUCKS. Last night's SNL wasn't either - as someone who has enjoyed the show 35+ years, I thought it was perfectly fine. If you don't generally enjoy SNL you probably won't enjoy this one.

The last few live ones before last night were pretty good. I don't think I laughed at all last night. Jack Black was terrible.

Well Elton John sucks by definition, obviously. Jack Black I’m too old to know or care who he is. SNL has sucked since the original cast left.
Bwahahaha. I have seen some hot takes but this is by far the most absurd. Honestly, as much as I love those guys SNL was not near as funny and polished in the 70’s as it was from 88-95 and I am someone who have probably seen every episode if not a skit from every episode except for the last 10 years. Oh look John Belushi is running into a wall, hilarious.

I think people tend to forget that not every episode of SNL during ANY era was great. Some of the skits during the 90’s were borderline unwatchable. All you are going to talk about are the good ones.

To be clear, I loved SNL during the 90s

And SNL has always been up and down. They get a great group of comedians, it’s great for a few years, said comedians move on to bigger things, the scraps that are left over suck, rinse , lather, repeat

This current cast isn’t very good, but they’ve had worse. The late 80s years were pretty rough too- almost killed the show. Anybody saying SNL hasn’t been funny in 40 years really missed out on the Jason Sedeukis, Amy Phoeller, Andy Samburg, etc group. I’d argue that was the best cast ever.

I haven't watched a full episode in a while. I have caught a couple of clips on YouTube. The Beavis and Butthead clip was probably the last one I laughed out loud at.

With that said, it appears SNL no longer relies on recurring characters for their skits. Rachel Dratch as Debbie Downer, Will Ferrell and Cheri OTeri as Spartan cheerleaders, Eddie Murphy in Mr. Robinson's neighborhood, Norman Macdonald as Burt Reynolds and many others over the years made that show funny and watchable.

The last full episode I watched just seemed like they threw a bunch of random ideas against a wall to see what would stick. The show always seemed to lean left but the way they approached specifically political skits was humorous. Now it just seems mean spirited and divisive.

I didn't watch the show. Are you saying Jack Black & Sir Elton sucked last night or in general?

If it's the latter, you're just wrong.

Saying “Keenan Thompson is the beat to ever do it” is what we’d call a “credibility killer”.
He’s their glue guy

If you’ve been there 20 seasons, you’ve got enough credibility

He’s not the best and considering all the folks who’ve been there, I hesitate giving him a specific ranking— if you twist my arm I’d say maybe top third but that might be a little too generous…

I was referring to VillageDawg having no credibility for saying that.

In any case, I think 20 years on SNL means you’re funny enough to not get fired, but not funny enough to break out into movies or your own TV show. Tim Meadows had kind of the same issue. Darrell Hammond had the same issue too, but I think that was largely because 99% of his SNL tenure was impressions.

If you don't like the Mercury Mistress - that's grounds for a ban.

So many good SNL actors that were great while on SNL - Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Cheri Oteri, Chris Parnell etc.

Well stand there in your wrongness. Reacting with bug eyes and acting incredulous doesn’t make you one of the best.

Keenan Thompson hasn’t been funny since ‘All That’.
I need to recant one thing here. He did “What’s Up With That?” and that was one of my favorite skits. They haven’t done it in years though.

SNL always sucked or not depending on the day and my mood. I have not watched in years as it comes on after my bed time and I can't seem to care about it enough to find episodes but:

I see a lot of clips and some of them are as funny as ever, some stink, but they always had the stinkers.
