They're easily the best thing on the current SNL, along with Kenan Thompson

Most people believe SNL was at its peak whenever they were in High School. I don't know if High School kids today even watch the show.

Can confirm that my kids have never watched it. If they have it would have been a clip on Instagram, Snap, etc.

The ones you mention don't even come close to Belushi, Ackroyd, Chase, Murray, Curtain, Radner, Morris, and Newman.
I’ve seen some re-runs, and I guess if you grew up in that era you’d find it hilarious. I never did, but to each his own.

As has been pointed out here, Eddie Murphy’s greatest SNL hits are comedy gold…. “When white people are alone, they GIVE things to each other!” when he went incognito as a white guy was classic.

But it was must-see TV from the mid 80’s until about the time of the Phil Hartman tragedy. And, in Jackson, it came on at midnight following the wrestling…. So it was even more of a commitment to watch, but it was always worth it.

I’m the same way. The comedy is generational and it was before my time.

Younger people watch those 90s SNLs and think the same thing.

I started watching in 77-78 season, 2nd season I believe. I would watch on Saturday night and on Monday I had library 3rd period in the morning in HS which consisted of all of us sitting around critiquing the episode. I watched for probably 10-15 years but they weren't funny anymore even back then. I think it's an aging thing, you just age out of the humor but still none were as funny as the first few years

Matt Foley living in a van down by the river. Anything with Eddie Murphy. Schweddy balls. D$&k in a box was classic. Church lady. Grumpy Old Man. Hot tub, in the water, ha, it’ll make you wet! Should I get in the hot tub.

None can hold a candle to the cast of the 1st few years except Hartman and Carvey. Those two would kick *** on any season from '75 on. Hartman especially....

It's easily forgotten, but SNL has been around for 50 years. There have been plenty of lean times. Sometimes it was a weak cast or weak writing or both, but they always seem to find their way out.

They even had cast members who were undoubtedly funny, but just didn't fit well or had bad writing. Julia Louis Dreyfuss, Gilbert Gottfried, Billy Crystal, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock.

And it's very hard to narrow down the great cast members or skits or eras to just a few. This thread has barely mentioned Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Kate McKinnon, Martin Short, Jason Sudeikis, Kristin Wiig, Bill Hader, etc etc...

Murphy as Stevie Wonder and Piscapo as Frank. Singing Ebony and Ivory.

SW: I am black and you are white.
FS: You are blind as a bat and I have sight.

And like I said, much edgier then. The next line was...

Side by side, you are my amigo,
Negro, let’s not fiiiiiiiight!”

Or Garrett Morris, I’m gonna get me a shotgun and kill all the whities I seeeeee.
Then you have Pryor and Chase word association.
Couple of names I haven’t seen thrown out there, Dennis Miller was weekend update for me since I started watching in the late 80’s.
Jon Lovitz made everyone laugh. Carvey told a story where he heard Lovitz howling laughing in his dressing room when he went in there Lovitz was watching tapes of himself.
Tina Fey is obviously a great writer as well. She’s constantly putting out funny stuff.

I agree SNL is in a lean era - in addition to a possibly weak cast, changing comedy tastes etc (as mentioned), one big reason is... how exactly do you satire trump?

I get it- how do you satire something that is already satirical, but I thought SNL did the presidential candidates really well this fall.

- Maya Rudolph as Harris was spot on and SNL got a ton of jokes in even if Harris was overall supported by the cast/writers.
- Hammond and Baldwin were funny Trumps, but Johnson's current version is unreal and even if its a perfect imitation, that alone is hilarious because the entire existence of Trump as president is hilarious. The jokes are sometimes subtle, but no less funny.
- Dana Carvey's Biden impression makes me laugh even just thinking about it now. The squinting to bulging eyes and every-man phrases were just awesome.

As for moving forward- I guess Johnson's job is secure at SNL for the next 4 years! He could just read actual transcripts of what Trump has said and the bonkersness of the text would get laughs.

Shane Gillis said something similar. He does very little addition to his Trump impersonations. His own words are hilarious enough.

SNL like any show is hit or miss. Nate Bargatze was great a few weeks ago and last year. A lot of it comes down to who is hosting. Please Don't Destroy is honestly the highlight right now. I think those guys are pretty funny. Maya Rudolph was great, and I think they played the election almost down the middle.

There's plenty from the 70's that fully stands the test of time. And they were edgier in a lot of ways then than now. Even if you don't know the current events underlying the comedy, the funny still gets through...

I think PooPops would have made a good writer for Aykroyd's part in these and will be reading his next rant in Aykroyd's voice. Forgotten how funny those were.
Stumbled across the very first episode while at State and was a pretty faithful watcher for the next 15 to 20 years. Musical guests were often a must watch in addition to the what will they do next element.
As others have said, then life moves on, things change and you just stop watching. In fairness, even "peak SNL" had its fair share of clunkers.

@mcdawg22’s favorite skits are Keenan Thompson impersonating his favorite game show host Steve Harvey
My sister and I pulled up a couple of Ferrell’s jeopardy skits a while back, and I was glad that we did because my YouTube feed has been giving me one of the SNL game show episodes each day ever since. There’s a dud every now and then, but by and large, they’re consistent gold

The John Mulaney game show skit was pretty funny a few weeks back. When he was able to name an adult film star and not a sitting senator was pretty good.

They are.

Lots of great impersonations, but Hammond's Connery and Norm's Burt are the essentials.

I think Norm created the first of these after getting permission from Eugene Levy, who did something similar on SCTV.

ETA, here's the first one...

Unpopular opinion: Most of that original cast are some of the most unfunny comedians in history. Yet legends all. I finally started liking Chevy Chase when he did Community. He was good in that.

STING!!!! The Stingmeister! Sting a ling a ling!!! MAKIN COPIES!!!!
My kids watch SNL- everything from the 90s, to 00s, to 10s, to now.
I showed them a Richmeister skit and they stared in disbelief for 3 minutes. Just total crickets at the end. It was interesting because it wasnt nearly as funny to me either.

But they are in tears over some Farley, Sandler, etc from the 90s, all the Jeopardy and other Ferrell skits from the 90s and 00s so it isnt totally that the period of TV or comedy misses the mark for them.
