The guy that took his place and performed pretty well for a true Freshmen is set to depart possibly while a Lebby recruit and current P5 QB may or may not and probably not come to State.
Have I got this BS right ?

Correct. This is a business decision. Depends on how much MVB is offered by other programs, I bet he gets 7 figure offers. We have to play money ball. Keep Shapen for the league minimum and hopefully sign Arnold for well less than $1mil. If we can keep MVB for about what it would cost to sign Arnold, I'd resign MVB.

Shapen was coming back regardless. That’s been known for a while.
Im assuming we signed him to a new deal. I doubt he would want to come back his last year to ride the bench. If he made 500k last year hes going to be making more this year. I think hes probably the starter. Im ok with that if mvb wants 1.5 million.

No he’s got a couple of endorsement deals that he can only get if he stays at State. It was a no brainer for him to stay. He’s making the same money roughly.

At what point does a guy say, like my team, I like my surroundings, I like being at MSU?

Judas Priest at the numbers ya'll are talking about for a has been, a bust, and a never will be. We could have signed Russell Wilson for less than MVB is asking for... And Stetson Bennett is making about what the other 2 want apparently.

This shít is broken. Might as well do away with the eligibility requirements at this point and let's go raid some NFL practice squads instead of paying mediocre at best college QBs more than the NFL pays competent backups.

What kind of deals does he have? I've never seen him pushing any products or businesses. The only reason I would recognize him outside of the context of an MSU football uniform is bc he's Keefe from Righteous Gemstones' doppelgänger.

I’m not sure what they are. I’ve never seen him either.

Hard to believe we are having these conversations about college football these days.

If it turns out we paid him $500k last year, I'll be super pissed. If we resigned him for that much or more, I'll stop buying season tickets, giving to the BC and the State Excellence fund (or whatever its called).

Again, if we didn’t run this style of offense, as opposed to a truly niche offense, we wouldn’t be in this predicament every year QB’s. If we run something similar to everyone else, and our guy does good or looks young and promising, then we will always be outbid by the big boys. Any niche offense QB isn’t going to have all the big boys beating down his door no matter how good he did. Who would come in and outbid us for someone like a Chris Relf or Nick Fitzgerald? Or a Bryson Daily ect

Never, most of these kids are dirt poor and come from single parent households. They are about the bag and I don't blame them. Most will never be pro and won't be making bank after college. This is their one chance.
Well I’ve been reading all these posts for days. I stand by my post the other day, CFB has been ruined by transfer portal and NIL. All these comments prove my point. IMO. Trainwreck

Pretty sure that’s been reported on the boards he got 500k, that’s pretty believable for a sec starting qb.

If he's out starting QB next year, we'll be 2-10 again. He's a backup, that's it. He got our pants beat off by......Toledo.

He had 319 yards passing vs Toledo. We lost because we had 69 yards rushing and gave up over 400 yards to freaking Toledo.
Shapen and MVB won exactly 1 game each. As someone said earlier we have to moneyball the entire roster. We can’t afford to tie up $1.5-$2million in MVB with the amount of players we need. There’s a finite amount of money and we have much bigger needs. If we don’t get Arnold and somehow Shapen is the starter, we’ll at least have sec players around him this time.

That remains to be seen. Let's hope so. And you're right. It's always going to be a moneyball situation with us in football roster management. We will never be anywhere near the top half of the SEC in NIL money. We have to find value players and not overpay for star players.

We literally can not field a worse defense so at least we should be marginally better on that side of the ball. If we can be 11th instead of 16th in total defense we’ll be much more competitive.

If he stays healthy I don’t think there’s that huge a difference with MVB. Line of scrimmage and defense is what’s going to win more than two games.
Don't know how to tell you this, but Shapen put a grand total of 17 points on Toledo in Starkville. SloMo put more points on Toledo than that.

With Shapen we probably wouldn't have scored at against Texas, UGA and TAMU.

Against such an inferior opponent, he has to put the team on his back in that situation, he didn't.

At any rate, we're likely not a bowl team next year, so why waste it developing a QB who will be out of eligibility? I'd rather start a true freshman. We need to be preparing for 2026, Shapen will not be around.

We aren’t starting a true freshman QB for the 2nd straight season. We are going to roll with a QB that doesn’t throw slants into the dirt 2 yards in front of receivers

MVB just officially entered the portal. So we might be unless we can get a good one in the portal, need to go hard after Arnold.

Not sure where some of these ideas concerning NIL values coming from. Looking at most of the top recruiting classes most of the teams average low six figures. Seven figures for a non-elite QB with many measurable shortcomings is not happening.

If you can't see the potential he displayed as a true freshmen against the toughest competition in the land, I don't know what to tell you. Look how much better Jaxson Dart has gotten over the years.

With MVB you're getting a three year starter, you're paying for potential as much as accomplishments.

Reminds me a little bit of Bryce Young physically. undersized, doesnt Run for a lot of yards. Be interesting to where he winds up.

It's possible that Van Buren will be better than Arnold by the end of his career, but in modern college football, you play to win now and worry about next year later.

Arnold is probably better than Van Buren right now (and that's clearly what Lebby thinks), and that's all that matters. We can worry about 2026 in a year.
