So about our guys being undersized…

Does Franklin recruit for speed and agility over size/bulk or are the S&C guys not developing these kids as well as other programs do? The latter is difficult to assess since we aren’t in Lasch. Still, is it bit of both, depending on the position?

The 15, 300 lb. scholarship players (as noted in another thread) are all receivers

It was brought up on another thread by another poster that some adjustments should have been made for Michigan. It is not acceptable to say at the end of the game that PSU was undersized.

They're not undersized. The coach just turns into a petulant child when he gets embarrassed.

Being undersized wasn't the cause of Mustipher getting wrong gapped on the Corum run, and Beamon is a good player.

They're just either poorly coached or haven't taken to good coaching. It's really all it is, but you'll never hear Franklin say it.

After hearing Franklin's comment I looked at Michigan's roster to see how big their front 7 on defense are. First, all of their LB are in the 6-1, 6-2, 230-235 range. Same is true for PSU except for Sutherland and that was (a) a coaches decision to move said player to LB and (b) CJF said Sutherland will be a LB "at the next level", so regardless of his size apparently he is a future NFL LB! In looking at their DL vs ours, they are again pretty similar with two significant outliers - Morris is an absolute beast at 6-6, 295. We don't have anyone who would be comparable. But that does not mean we are small. The other outlier is Beamon. He is definitely small for a DT. But if he is your concern, why not make him a rotational player for the UM game and only play him 15-20 plays? Instead play PJ, Ellies and Izzard. The latter two played last year against UM and help up pretty well. Similarly, if you are concerned about Chop and Isaac, play more of Vanover and DDS.
I get the distinct impression there is a backstory to CJFs comment, which is known inside the program. Maybe some of these guys failed to meet their weight goals coming into fall camp; maybe those same guys have pushed back and involved the Donald comparison. I feel like there is more to that story.

They showed 2 replays during the game that were very telling.

Both of them involved PJ.

1. PJ steps from his stance and to the right. Michigan OL turns PJ away from the gap he just left. Big hole, yes. We have a LB in a 1v1 and Jacobs throws a shoulder at Corum at the LoS. Corum bounces off and gets positive yardage.

2. PJ gets duo blocked at the snap. Corum hits the hole and Sutherland hits him at the 2 yard gain mark, but doesn't bring him down. I think Elsdon hits him next but trys to strip the ball. A safety finally brings him down after a 9 yard gain.

Essentially, Michigan used 6 men to beat our 4 DL and then let the RBs feast on our LBs in 1v1s.

I don’t see them undersized. I see a problem in the weight room. Other teams players just seem stronger and more powerful. Franklin has to stop making excuses for his mismanagement and failures. Please resign or take another coaching job somewhere

Yeah, good post.

I agree there is almost certainly a backstory there from inside the program. Again, though, these guys could be better, but for someone to take shots at them when anyone with a pulse and any formal football background can see that the linebackers, all of them, just didn't play well. He hopes YOU don't know that, though, and because he had an issue with guys getting bigger, he's taking a shot.

Addressing a few points from this post....IMHO;
  1. Franklin recruits whoever is Interested in us based on Ranking system and our needs simple as that IMHO
    1. These kids (and I know from first hand experience) choose the perceived Best school thats offers them not the school that may be best for them.
    2. Franklin like most coaches rely on the ranking system and stack up on the STARS...vs. good evaluations--I know I know JF 3* etc.
  2. We are Not undersized--Another weak Excuse in a forgiving society especially soft media
  3. Sutherland was moved because he was recruited as a DB--he lacks a few things; quickness, speed and ball awareness thus the staff moved him and he isn't effective at all---What would you all do with him?? Great kid though really good kid great representative of school
    1. To point #1---4* Recruit as a DB---he is a lite 3* IMHO
    2. To point #1 ---Sutherlands best school offer was PSU---should have gone to BC or App State...
  4. No Development---Who is our LB'ers Coach????
  5. Our fundamentals are not good on the defensive side at all---dont wrap when tackling, dont fill well, scraping...Safety's on run support is lacking
  6. Franklin is safe and has become complacent.
