Does Franklin recruit for speed and agility over size/bulk or are the S&C guys not developing these kids as well as other programs do? The latter is difficult to assess since we aren’t in Lasch. Still, is it bit of both, depending on the position?
The 15, 300 lb. scholarship players (as noted in another thread) are all receiversDoes Franklin recruit for speed and agility over size/bulk or are the S&C guys not developing these kids as well as other programs do? Significant shrinkage! They were all in the pool.
After hearing Franklin's comment I looked at Michigan's roster to see how big their front 7 on defense are. First, all of their LB are in the 6-1, 6-2, 230-235 range. Same is true for PSU except for Sutherland and that was (a) a coaches decision to move said player to LB and (b) CJF said Sutherland will be a LB "at the next level", so regardless of his size apparently he is a future NFL LB! In looking at their DL vs ours, they are again pretty similar with two significant outliers - Morris is an absolute beast at 6-6, 295. We don't have anyone who would be comparable. But that does not mean we are small. The other outlier is Beamon. He is definitely small for a DT. But if he is your concern, why not make him a rotational player for the UM game and only play him 15-20 plays? Instead play PJ, Ellies and Izzard. The latter two played last year against UM and help up pretty well. Similarly, if you are concerned about Chop and Isaac, play more of Vanover and DDS.They're not undersized. The coach just turns into a petulant child when he gets embarrassed.
Being undersized wasn't the cause of Mustipher getting wrong gapped on the Corum run, and Beamon is a good player.
They're just either poorly coached or haven't taken to good coaching. It's really all it is, but you'll never hear Franklin say it.

I get the distinct impression there is a backstory to CJFs comment, which is known inside the program. Maybe some of these guys failed to meet their weight goals coming into fall camp; maybe those same guys have pushed back and involved the Donald comparison. I feel like there is more to that story.
