Not really a first time IC since Lebby will call playsYet again, we've got a very young coaching staff with a 1st time head coach, 1st time offensive coordinator, and 1st time defensive coordinator. Have we learned nothing from last year?

Feels like what we were saying about Peter Sirmon once upon a time.Seems like an rising star in the coaching world. That being said, none of us really know. Could be a homerun, or the guy could fall flat on his face given he is not going to have the kind of resources and players at State he had at most of his other stops.
3 / 233Was Co-DC at Texas in 2020.
I feel like there are too many current and former DC's around this country to have to get a first time guy. Head coach? Sure. I don't love being somebody's first stop, but it is what it is. A DC? There are just too many options out there. No experience calling defense? Great. So this is Brock. I guess we just can't hire anyone experience at doing a job since leach died. Couldnt get a good OC last year. Hire an OC with no head coaching experience to be our head guy then hire a position coach and special teams guy to be our DC. We sure do make some head scratching hires and then wonder why we suck a year later. Sorry, but we are getting exactly what we are getting for an inexperienced head coach two years in a row. Not being able to get a sitting DC with experience with an inexperienced head coach is meh.
Show me on the doll where Peter Sirmon touched you? No in all seriousness none of us has any idea how this hire will work out. Positives seem to be the guy has been around defensive minds, and is reported to be a good recruiter. Negatives seem to be he has never been totally in charge of a defense which can be a whole different animal. Sounds like we took a shot.Feels like what we were saying about Peter Sirmon once upon a time.

True. I'm hoping he works out. I'd rather I was wrong for the Sirmon comparison and Hutzler ends up being a solid DC than be right about it. I went back and looked at Hadad's post announcing Sirmon as the DC and the overwhelming sentiment there was "well, he's a first time DC, but he has a pedigree and he's a solid recruiter". There's also a DJ Durkin reference there as well.No in all seriousness none of us has any idea how this hire will work out. Agreed on all counts. My big reservation is we have a first year head coach. Lebby, for all his hype, needs more experience around him just in one Devil's opinion. If we had a shot at getting Collins, Shannon, or Durkin and hired this guy anyway then that my friends is dumb.
So 28.5 PPG / 406.6 YPG at Texas as Co-DC3 / 233
56 / 441
33 / 458
53 / 469
16 / 316
34 / 530
13 / 360
23 / 433
31 / 448
23 / 378
That's the number of Points and Yards that Texas gave up during the 2020 season.
Meanwhile, our history of going after G5 sitting DCs has been very good to us. Manny, Psycho Geoff, Manny again, Grantham, Shoop and Arnett.DCs that State has hired with little to no DC experience since 2003, and our record with them:
- Ron Cooper (2003, 1 season, 39.3 PPG) 2-10
- Charlie Harbison (2008, 1 season, 24.7 PPG) 4-8
- Peter Sirmon (2016, 1 season, 31.7 PPG) 6-7
- Matt Brock (2023, 1 season, 26.6 PPG) 5-7
Now, Coleman Hutzler (2024, ?)
Safe to say, our history with hiring guys with little DC experience has not been good to us in the past...
