So, which lucky human will be the first Miss. State coach to earn $10M per year?

It will happen before we know it. The price of poker is rising every day.

Bama will end up paying a coach $20M/year. Schools like State will have to pay $10M just to keep going 8-4, 7-5. The charts don’t lie.

I’m old enough to remember when $5M for a coach was a scandalous sum. Man.. 2013 was a great year..

The salaries have got to top out at some point. They really are rising out of control. Mel Tucker got $9.5 million for one good season at Michigan State. Freeze is getting $4 million at Liberty. It’s insane.

I wonder what Saban is making now. I saw something a couple years ago stating he has a clause that keeps him the highest paid coach.

Tony Barnhart on record that the only way to stop the ridiculous escalation of salaries is for the university presidents to say "no"...probably won't happen for a number of reasons.

The amount of money coming in to programs from media outlets (ESPN/Disney) is insane. As long as that keeps happening the price to play will rise.

Or if boosters start spending money on NIL deals instead of donations, so that there isn't a surplus of money and no better investment than coaching.

I remember when Bama hired Saban for $4 million and it was considered lucrative.

This is correct. As long as the TV money keeps rolling in, salaries will keep going up, up, up. Even as lavishly as schools spend on facilities, coach buyouts, beefing up the athletic department, etc., they know the most important investment is in the football head coach. Money has to be spent somewhere.

And that's when all the ridiculous salaries for college coaches got started. They all should thank Saban.

May be too late and probably is but the only guy that could have put an end to the insanity would be the college or university president.

I’ll tell you what - it’s basically $2500 for 5 football season tickets in a mediocre section. I just don’t see the value to spend that much money to sit in a stadium seat. To make matters worse, $2500 is not a meaningless percentage of my income but appears to be child’s play when considering coach’s salaries and some player NIL deals.

At some point soon, folks like me will decide it ain’t a value anymore and will stay home. Hell, I’ve already made that decision. Whatever program can figure out how to keep Butts in the seats and fans engaged for in game events will be building something special. I think that is more valuable to the program long term than maximizing seat revenue today.
